Bella Thread

I was looking through my posts and must apologize for most of them lol!! I have decided to just have one thread per snake like most normal people[emoji15] Man the people that run this forum must hate me lol anyway from now on all of the Bella posts will be here!!

Tonight was supposed to be meal day but poor Bella is still in blue!! I looked in her log and she just had this look on her face like "Mom please help me get rid of this tight skin, I'm so hungry and just want to eat!" Well Bella I can't help you shed but I can hold your mouse till your ready[emoji216]

Poor baby!! :awcrap:

Doesn't take much to empathize with our little sneaky ones, especially when you love 'em, no?

Oh well, like I always say in situations similar to this, "There's finally a light at the end of the tunnel!!" (But let us always hope that it is NOT the light from an ONCOMING TRAIN!!!)

Thanx for sharing Bella with us!! :p

Sweet little girl. July certainly has been shed month around here! Thanks for staring this Bella thread. I m looking forward to seeing it unfold.

Just looks really healthy to me! (Maybe an Italian from Brooklyn is NOT the best one to ask if a person or even a sneaky one looks FAT! I can't jump to a CONCLUSION myself!!!!!) :p

But seriously, she doesn't look obese or anything. Just healthy!

Ohh, she's lovely! Gotta' love a nice amel, not that I'm biased...

Anyway, I don't think she looks overweight, I think she looks just right!

Also, in reference to your first post, mine is a pig and eats regardless of whether he's in blue or not. He's in shed right now and I can all but guarantee he'll wolf down his dinner on Sunday regardless =P

I think she's fine. I don't think a growing snake can really get fat. I know you are feeding appropriate sized prey at an appropriate interval so no worries!

She's so beautiful.

I know you asked Axis, but I hope you don't mind my chiming in. Back her off one day every few feedings. This is presuming a fairly steady prey size. I doubt she's through growing so monitor closely her weight and/or her shape. Just go slowly and play it by ear. The right interval will show itself and if needed can be adjusted as necessary.

I'm doing similar right now with Mandy, who though a full grown adult was a bit underweight by shape when I got her. She's gained about 60 grams now, looks great, and I'm gradually increasing the feeding interval to stabilize her weight. This will be her first 10 day feeding, and that will increase or decrease again depending on the direction of her weight. In her case, she's effectively done growing so my goal is slightly different than yours, but I'm sure you get the idea.

As long as you keep a close and thoughtful eye, you will figure it out and keep her at a healthy weight.

Yes.

Add a day every week or two. No exact formula. Just do it gradually. Watch to see how it affects her growth rate.

No, there is no normal. They gain what they gain. Just like us it depends on their metabolism, exercise, and the nutritional values of their prey.

Now my Cleo is a young growing snake, 11 months old. At the moment she's eating 8 to 11 gram prey depending what's in the hopper bag that week. She weighs 113 grams and is being fed once per week. She is gaining on average for the last month, 3 grams a week. Now 3 grams a week is 156 grams a year so it will probably slow down a bit, and of course between 1 and 2 years of age I will be upping her prey size and probably increasing the interval. In any case as you can see there are so many factors.

I just want to see her grow slow and steady to her ultimate length and weight. At this point I have no idea what that will be. I just have to keep adjusting as the situation changes in order to give her enough to grow at her own rate, without feeding her too much (or too little) and growing her too fast (or too slow).

P.S. The old feed prey that is no larger than 1.5 times the largest diameter of the snake, and that leaves a bulge for a couple of days, and monitor the crossection shape is really the short story.

I'm sorry if I'm making it too complicated. I just mentally take all the factors together and make gradual changes on where I think we (meaning me and my snakes) need to go to keep my snakes healthy. I monitor my decisions by weighing as well but it is really the big picture that needs to be in mind.

Like I originally said, feed appropriate size prey at appropriate intervals and Bella will be fine.

They grow at their own rate, Nicole. Please remember that. This is not uncommon. Bella is fine. She may be going to be a big girl, maybe bigger than Cleo will ever be.
