Bloodred Help Please

Stoner Chick
I'm determined to have my next corn be a bloodred. The pet store near my house informed me that they should be getting some in a few weeks. Problem is I don't know a thing about what to look for in selecting a baby bloodred and what questions I should ask. Of couse I want a beauty but from what I've read on here the breeding of them is so mixed and diverse these days. So...could you guys help me out and tell me what to look for when I select my new lil guy. I've also heard that the colorings of males vs. females are different as they age? Is there a preference to who the parents are that will be more likely to produce a handsome feller? Please if you have any insight as to what to look for of a baby or what questions I should ask of the sellers let me know. Thank you.:p

If you plan on getting it from a petstore

Please make sure the are a reputable place and that you know the "charateristics" to look for...The reason being is alot of the petstores sell normal corns under wierd of incorrect names...

As what to look for try searching this forums for pics and info, and it helps to read this page , so you can get an understanding of the cultivar and it's traits...

Remember research and patience make the best choices...

Also keep in mind that Bloodreds look quite normals as juveniles. They do not develop the sweeping red color until adulthood.

Sex has nothing to do with their adult color. Hatchlings look much like normal hatchlings with the exception that there heads have very little or almost no pattern. I would choose the one that looks healthiest. Kathy loves site has pictures of hatchlings and adults, you might want to check that out.

The traits in hatchings that make the best bloodreds, IMO, are:

Very gray heads with a skull pattern
Gray to red background coloration
Very little to no pattern along the sides
A clean white belly (no black specks; red of the belly is okay)
No "tiger stripes" at the mouth

Wow Amanda that is an awesome looking Bloodred. Do you sell hatchlings from her/him? I used to breed the "Old Style" Bloodreds, the dark red with pure white ventral difficult feeders, years ago. Now that I am getting back into Corns I have been afraid to get any Bloods as I am totally confused as to what has happened to them :(

Thanx for the help guys. I trust the pet store that I go to. All of their exotics look very healthy and they drive to another state to hand pick all of their reptiles. It was kinda funny actually, the owner refused to sell some teen a emerald treee boa because he wanted to get it as a gift for a friend. She was too concerned about the boa to just sell it off as a gift. Made me feel good that she was concerned for the snakes well being.

Thank you so much Amanda for the pics and descriptions. A very beautiful snake!! Now I have myself a beautiful pic as a reference.

Unfortunatley no, at least not this year. I hope to have a clutch from him and my female in 2005 though. Right now the female is just too small, she's a skinny 250 grams.
