bottled water vs tap water

I am going to get a corn soon and was wondering the following...I have heard that it is risky giving a corn tap water because of the additives in the water (ie chlorine) and that you should give your snake bottled water. Is water a big issue? what about collected rain water? I would rather not pay for bottled water every week if I do not need to. thanx all.

I give mine bottled water over tap water but I wouldn't give collected water from a water butt as this may contain polutants from the environment (eg: chimneys, car fumes) but saying that I use water from the water butt to put in my tank for my axolotl - he's never bothered (to-date).

I get my water free from work as we have water coolers with water delivered from (Eden) but buying it to use is cheap enough as you really don't use alot for snakes.

Hope this helps.

Bottled water is cheap.....and one gallon will last weeks.....I mean they dont drink that much and only need a small water dish full in there for them.

Bottled water is relatively inexpensive unless you decide to use something like Evian for example, however it will never be as cheap as city water from a faucet. Although you cannot use this water right out of the tap, it is very easy to rectify. There are 2 ways to do this,
1) Chemically treat it with a commercial treatment available at most , if not all, pet stores. Zoo Med's Reptisafe is one example. Just a few dollars will treat gallons of water to be treated as needed.
2) City supply water can be "cured" to evaporate the chlorine simply by leaving an open container (small bucket or jug) overnight, preferably 2 nights. Chlorine will diffuse naturally without the presence of UV light (any amount of sunlight), hence the over night references.
I don't know what size corn you are anticipating, but hatchlings do require comparatively less water than an adult, however the water dish I recommend be large enough for the snake to get completely into, and of course out of, as it desires. This can be quite small for a hatchling so a full gallon of bottled water will last you months. Since these bottles have no "preservatives" in them and commonly contain high levels of bacteria you will be wasting a lot of that water.
Having said all that it ultimately comes down to your preferences.
I hope this helps some and welcome to corn snakes. :)

Bottled water is best because of cholorine and goodness knows what else is added in. I get mine from the local filtration station outside the supermarket, 30 cents a gallon will not break me! Sometimes the large gallon bottles go on sale at Walgreens, but usually I just refill. My snakes are big, 4 feet and over 5, so I go through 2-3 gallons weekly, but it's not expensive. :wavey:

I use purified water from Safeway at 0.50 gal. it Im not even half way through my first jug and its been 2 months since I bought it. I just keep it at room temperature because thats how they like it.

I just use water from the tap and i haven't had a problem yet. I've had my corn for 9 months. :|

i watched a bit on the news... and they tested NY tap water and bottled... there was no difference...

i also heard if you would drink the water then it is ok for your snake... i drink tap...

Does anyone know what's in the water that is bad for the snakes. Because if so, then you can find out from your water treatment company the quality of the water and see if the reading are safe or not for the snake. Although, I'm looking at the readings from my water company and I can't make much sense of it. It's telling me that the highest level detected of chlorine was 1.5528 ppm (parts per million), but that really has no meaning to me, so whatever.
