Breeding size/age

Rachel

Vet nurse in training!
Hey everyone,

Well we've given up hope of finding Macy (and obviously breeding this season). So the spotlight is now on Noodle who will hopefully be breedable by next season. The thing is is that she doesn't seem to be growing as fast as the other snakes, but is healthy and eating well etc.

Someone suggested that I could feed her every 4 days to speed up her growth but what I want to know is size the depending factor on female breeding or maturity? I wouldn't want to fatten her up, breed her only to find that she wasn't at the right stage to cope with egg production and laying. Although I would like to start the breeding project asap, I don't want to jeopordise my snakes health :(

The safe bet is on size. I have been told “Well they breed in the wild at two years big enough or not”, but exercise my play a big roll in that. I think I read in the Corn Snake manual that the Love’s experienced a lot of egg bindings in females till they were switched to bigger cages and had room to move about. I also shake my gravid females F/T to make them constrict their food to let them get a little more exercise.

It also says in the manual that sexual maturity is a matter of size, not age :) Three feet is widely considered minimum breeding size though some say a little less and some say a little more and others say that they should be at least three years old. I'd say three feet or a little over. I think you should carry on feeding as normal until September and then start feeding once every four or five days [as is usually the practice at that time of year, 'fattening up' ready for brumation in December] and, if she's not at the right size by the time the cooling down period comes along in mid-November then I wouldn't breed her. How long is she now? How much does she weigh?

Smile!

Hey-
I feel the same way, I was planning on breeding my female anery this spring, but she wasn't long enough until last month, so now I have to wait. I would suggest like all the others, making sure shes around 36 inches long and try breeding her, or you could go buy another snake.... it's a dumb idea, but you can never have too many corns right? Remember to smile and have fun whe you breed her!

Cheers for all your replies!

Crissie, I would LOVE another corn but unfortunately the pet shop wont get any till August/September and they will be hatchlings. So if any of you have a mature female then feel free to send it my way! ;)

In the mean time, I'll just wait not very patiently....
