Cage temps

The nice thing about not getting my girl yesterday was that I could watch temps in her cage yesterday and this morning. I am using a ThermaBlue thermometer (they only had one) and checked both sides. I am picking up another thermometer today. I was exhausted yesterday from all the running and had to be home to get my kids.
On the warm side I placed my probe under the Aspen and the glass read 94 F. On the cool side it is reading 69.3 F. My thermostat won't be here until the 5-7th. No store in my area carries them (the dummies lol). Now I read somewhere on here I can put a ceramic tile or two down between the Aspen and the UTH to keep my snake from burning herself. Is that true?

I have placed about a half inch thick of folded newspapers over a heat pad to help disperse heat before. In fact years ago when I had one of my Boa Constrictors, I never did have a thermostat. I learned to regulate the heat with the correct amount of Newspapers.

I do however, use a thermostat today as I despise paying for and reading newspapers.

My mom and step dad read the paper. I can get newspaper lol. Though she doesn't know I have a snake yet lol. That will be a story for another day. My critter cage is set up in my room and she rarely goes in there.

I will be buying a 40g breeder next month. Not for her to go immediately in but due to the sale PetSmart is having I can't pass one up. They are having a $1 a gallon sell. Pet Supplies Plus is having a sale 50% of Critter Cages and 25% off Zilla supplies.

not trying to preach, but I was a kid myself way way back. I too had a pet snake but my mom, unlike your's, knew all about it. In fact she helped me with it until I was sure I knew what I was doing.

It's "Never" a good idea to hide things or keep secrets from your parents. They will find out at some point, and it will save you a lot of heartbreak, grief, and panic if you get it all out in the open now. Not to mention the money you are spending and what if they make you get rid of the snake?

My dad used to say all the time - "As long as you live under my roof, I make the rules....." Blah blah blah. But he was right. I was a kid and it was his house and he paid the bills. Now I am a grown man, in my own house and I make the rules.

I'm not concerned for you. I am concerned for the animals. Too many people rush out and get pet snakes because they think it's cool or whatever. And never do the necessary research or have any idea what's involved, or in your case, are probably too young and go behind their parents back just to impress their neighbors or school chums.

For gosh sakes talk to your parents.

They may surprise you and even help you with it. The fact that you're "Hiding and being secretive" about it tells me there will be problems down the road.

I'm an adult lol. The tank is set up in my room where it is quieter. :) I'm not hiding my snake from her but I know the lecture I will get. Lol

Another reason for setting up in my room is I have a cat. So when I take my kids anywhere or go to the store I can shut my bedroom door and keep her safe from the cat. I expect him to be curious about this new sibling who has moved in. I want to be sure she is safe at all costs. Now as for my dog all I have to say is baby and she is good. :) :) I had a two ball pythons when my dog was a puppy. So she is accustomed to snakes.

Try going to Walmart or a hardware store and buying a light dimmer to lower the temps to a desired range

I actually was able to go to Petco and buy the only thermostat they had. :) :) I bought the Zilla 1000 watt Temperature Control for $12. :) :) I have set it up. Until I can get to the local hardware store (which is closed on Sundays) on Monday the thermostat probe is in the critter cage. Once I can get to the store on Monday I will buy the aluminum tape and tape it to the UTH. :)
