Camera comparison

I'm wanting to buy a new digital camera, and was wondering if anyone knew anything about these 2 cameras. The Canon powershot A95 or the Fujifilm finepix s5100. I've looked a lots of cameras and
I've narrowed it down to these 2. Any advice will be greatly appreciated. Thanks,
dana leduc

Hands down the A95, but I'm a canon snob and really dislike Fuji for anything other than Film (developing). Even though that IS a nice camera. lol

I own the A70, and for the price, the excellent quality lenses, and the features that Canon offers on their cameras, I wouldn't look anywhere else. Unless you want to spend more money, in which case I would run (not walk) towards Nikon. But for my needs (and pockets), Canon is where it's at.

JMHO. :)

Go for the Canon. I'm looking at getting one from the Powershot series as well. After looking around for several months, those are the ones I keep coming back to because they have a good balance of features and price. I borrowed a friend of mine's to take a couple pictures a few weeks ago. They've got a nice macro mode to them - here's one by an A60.

I have the Fuji s5100. I absolutely adore it. I haven't had to adjust color for it yet at all. The macro is stellar, and the zoom is spectacular.
I know nothing about the Canon, so I can't help you with a true comparison.

I have the Fuji S5000 and I bought it for the zoom. Camera works great. I bought the Canon A85 for the kids because they didn't want such a "big" camera. The Canon is a good point and shoot camera and it is alot smaller than the Fuji. The choice depends on what features you want. Compact versus zoom.

I'd recommend you check out the Nikon Coolpix 3700 before buying the Canon. It's only 3.2 vs. 5.0 megapixel, but the Nikon can take 640x480 videos at 30 fps (the Canon is limited to 15 fps.) The main advantage right now is that Nikon is offering a $100 rebate if you purchase it by the end of this month. You can end up paying less than $150, after the rebate, if you shop around. I also like the fact that it comes with a rechargeable battery and charger. Here's a sample photo, cropped from a larger image taken with a telephoto and flash from halfway across the room (through glass.) The Nikon uses SD cards (newest type) and is very small (smaller than the Canon.) Don't forget more megapixels usually means a slower camera. The Nikon 3700 is fast. There are plenty of reviews out there. I've never seen any unfavorable review of the 3700, and I've read many. The Nikon offers less true manual controls than the Canon, but it's very easy to use the Nikon's scene feature to achieve the results you want (probably faster too.) Just make sure you buy from an authorized Nikon retailer, to get the rebate.

Here's a macro shot taken with the Nikon 3700 (for less than $150 after rebate, including rechargeable battery/charger)...

Thanks for all the help. My husband is on my computer right now, so I'm on his laptop under his name. Well we are heading out to compare 3 cameras now. The Nikon sounds really great to. Great pictures everyone. Thanks again.

I bought mine on-line and had it in a few days. The prices vary A LOT on the Nikon, from about $219, before rebate, to $359 or even $399 (suggested retail) at some stores. I just looked for the on-line seller with the highest rating, over 4 1/2 out of 5 stars. I think it was digitalfotoclub.com. Not that it's any better than the rest, but I did have good luck with that company. Their current price is about $220 plus shipping, so your total cost could be under $130 after the rebate. Hopefully Jeff will consider this camera too. The only reason I can think of not to get it is if you MUST have 5 megapixels or whatever. But for a 3.2, it takes great (and fast) pictures. I print out 8 by 10s, and they look photo quality. There's more to a camera, as far as quality, than the number of megapixels. I like Canons too, though. My 35 mm is an old Canon AE-1, and I still use it. Btw, I placed my order for the camera over the phone, not through the internet. Sometimes it's better to talk to a real person.

You may also want to look at the Minolta DiMAGE Z1. That's my first choice for a new one, but I'll go for a Canon if I can't find the Minolta at a decent price or something. This one has 2 macro modes, 3.2 mp(which isn't an issue unless you're planning on blowing up prints), and 10x optical zoom. Definately worth a look. I'm finding prices anywhere from $400 to less than $200 brand new from a dealer...

I do a lot with cameras and pic taking and fujifilm cameras for a film camera suck, but they are the leaders for quality in the digital world right now.

I and a lot of others would disagree with that statement about Fuji being the leader in quality. What models of Nikons and/or Canons have you personally used, to compare with Fuji?
