One of the 5 feeders I got to fatten up for Butter started to get really fat (go figure, right?). Since I've had them only 3 weeks now, she was obviously already pregnant when I got them.

Last night, she had a litter of 10. I culled out 5 this morning to feed to Vern (now just to get her to actually eat. Hmmmph...). I'll cull more over the next few days and then leave one or two to grow into Butter food.

At this point, I don't think I want a sustained colony, but it's nice to get some pinks out of the deal now and then. I set up my MouseHouse because the feeders I get locally are all a bit on the light side and want to keep them for a few weeks each and get them a healthier diet for a while to give myself the illusion that I'm feeding Butter better mice than if I bought them one at a time on feeding days.

Oh, yeah... Butter had a much better 2-piece shed this week. He's looking pretty good. Need to put up an updated pic of my Survivor Boy.

Lucky you for getting some extra feeders out of the deal!!!

I went to a petshop the other day to buy some feeders and ended up coming home with 3 pregnant females! lol I haven't actually fed off any of the 6 I bought (all females)...lol

did the same thing the other day. I bought some live feeders for the russian ratsnake who is a stubborn pain in the butt and got them home, looked at two of the females and saw they were buldging and thought what the heck, start another colony, lol. I know what you are saying about fattening them up. That is one of the reasons why I started my own colonies of mice, the ones I would get from the local stores just always seemed so small. I also have some colonies of fancy mice and have found that they seem to get bigger than the white/pink eyed ones.

I'm sure I feed off a male last time, and I know that at least one of the remaining 4 is male (he'll be tonight's dinner for Butter). There's another one starting to get a little rotund in the sides, so I might get another litter out of this bunch.
