cleaning bark hide

Hi :wavey:

Can anyone tell me the best way to clean/disinfect a bark hide....

I was disinfecting it and then giving it a good rinse every 4 to 6 weeks then letting it dry naturally, but now it has some black (mould?) parts that are a bit powdery and is developing large holes at the top.

Help please

thank you

Hi There!
I clean my bark hides about the same way you do, the only difference (I think) is I put them in the full sun to dry... I live in Florida, perhaps after you clean & disinfect you could put them in the oven on a low temp to have them dry completely

I would love to send you some sun :) but, it doesn't ship well ;)

I would try to clean & disinfect again, then, try the oven see how it looks- if you kill the mold you should be OK- if it still looks (or smells) bad I would get another piece

good luck :)

In the uk gas mark 2 for 20 mins of so usually kills anything off after being disinfected (5% bleach solution) and left over night or 12 hours depending on when you do it to air dry.

Hope this help's marg

Well... I don't think the microwave is a good idea :eek1: being from across the pond I'm not sure what an airing cupboard is :shrugs: but it sounds good ;)
another option I have started using is a faux wood hide I love the fact I can scrub them down & not worry about stuff being absorbed in the wood/ bark- it's not as nice as wood but from a distance not too bad ;)

Between the "airing cupboard" and "uk gas mark 2" I am reminded once again that the English and Americans are separated by a common language. After bleaching and rinsing even if it dries slowly you should be OK on mold.
