cleaning suggestions?

guiding blind in darkness
tomorrow i'm doing a deep cleaning of smeagol's cage.
i'm going to go over everything... usually i skip over the branches and the hiding spot over his heated area. (he's a hiding spot where it's heated, and then a carved out dog dish for both water and hiding under.) i also don't usually clean the glass (once every six months maybe.)

i've heard several times that it's good to take a cup of bleach diluted with a couple cups of water and just basically clean everything in the cage with that.

however, i'm concerned that the bleach may soak into the wood (smeagol has two wood branches and a weird... plasticy.... branch thing that bends into different shapes and may also soak a bunch of bleach up) and harm him. i'm also concerned that i may bleach the wood, water bowl, and other hiding spot so that they become white, or at least lighter in color than they are right now.

of course my main concern is my snake's health, not the appearance of his cage.
so i'd like to check and double check on the best way to safely disinfect everything.

thanks in advance. :)

well, usually if I use bleach it is a 1 part bleach/10 parts water solution. It can clean and disinfect but isnt harmful (even use it on my birdy things). Just need to remember to rinse everything very well.

I also use a tiny bit of bleach mixed in water...

If you are concerned about his decorations soaking in the bleach, clean those with just soap and water and rinse off well.

I clean my wooden cage with bleach and none of the snakes who have been in there have shown and ill effects. I do rinse it off with clean water after washing with a bleach solution though! :)

I had a cage decked out in wooden decor when I got my first hatchling, and then when she ended up testing positive for crypt, I had to get rid of all of it because there is no real way to sanitize it. (With crypt I would have chucked everything anyway, regardless of whether it was "sanitizable")

But the point is that I learned from my mistakes... and my new snake Hokie only has non-permeable manmade objects to climb on in his tank. :) So keep that in mind for your next snake.
