Communal Cornsnakes ?

BrianS

Arachnosnake
This may be a silly question but here goes. Does anyone keep more than one snake together other than when breeding? What about keeping a different species with a corn such as a different Rat Snake? I know keeping a Kingsnake with one would be quite a disaster LOL but I was just curious about others.

i have two...

separate tanks for my snakes for several reasons...a) i bought the second one last week and am quarantining him from the other, he is in a separate room. b) aelfric is a hatchling and norbert is a yearling, i fear that if housed together norbert might get agressive if aelfric gets in his way or takes his favorite hide or something along those lines. c) if one snake sees the other snake moving around he may mistake it for food and attack it. d) there is a possibility of cannabilism among cornsnakes. e) if i leave them together it is more difficult to know which one ate, which one had a dropping, even which one shed.

it is not recommended that cornsnakes be housed together or with other snakes. people do it, but i never would.

:duck:

I would definitely recommend keeping snakes seperately. Do a search on cannibalism and you'll figure out why really quick.

It depends on your snakes Brian. I keep some together, both young corns and adults, and I generally don't have a problem. I keep a pretty close eye on the so that way, I can avoid a problem BEFORE its happens. Some of my females are cagemates during the off season just to help with space. Lately I've been staying at an apt until my house is built, so its kinda small. I keep my males sperate though, that way I don't have any problems with territorial combat. I haven't had a problem with cannibalism yet between hatchlings or adults. That doesn't mean I never will, but all hatchlings that are kept together have been together since hatching. If not, then they are kept in i think 32 oz deli cups with hides and water.

That's interesting Catherine. I only have 2 now so I will keep them separated. I guess I was asking in case I do get more in the future. I appreciate everyones help.

What I would suggest is going into the search option and read the probably thousand responses on the topic. There has been all sorts of arguments for and against housing together. I house mine seperately mostly for health reasons. If one gets sick, it's more likely the one housed with it will. If one regurges, I know which it is.
