Corn Snake Hatchling Tries To Bite

On Sunday I purchased a corn snake hatchling. I know I just got him, but I was wondering if I should be concerned that he strikes at me when I try to get him out of the tank. I approch slowly from the front and hold my hand out so he will slid onto it. But instead he stops moving and strikes at me. I understand that he is also getting used to moving it, but Im afraid that I will have to always get him out by using cups so he wont bite. Once I get him out of the cage he is fine and very tame.

Sorry my thoughts are jumbled, its late. Any thoughts on how to keep him from striking at me?

That's normal. They do that even before they are all the way out of the egg. They are trying to say "don't eat me". It'll get used to you and calm down. Well, at least the normally do. :grin01:

its normal....my cron snake Terra struck me a couple times when i first brought her home but after a whole week of not messing with her at all she was a perfect angel.

Imagine a gigantic mouth of long teeth comming slowly towards you... you would react the same way :grin01: The hand can be a scary thing when you're small.

Your little hatchling will get used to you and eventually will not strike when you reach in to get it out for handling.

Hey mate, the biting is normal, BUT... I think you should change the way you pick him/ her up.

the snake will never crawl onto your hand like a hamster or something would, its a lot harder for a snake to learn things if at all possible... Its better to just snatch them out of the tank rather quickly than slowly, moving slowly and just hanging around with your hand in the cage is more threatening and stressful than just whipping them out.

If you just stick your hand in, and without hessitation (sp?) pick him up and out of the tank, he shouldnt bite you, or at least not as much.

Just remember, hatchling bites dont hurt, you wouldnt even know that he bit you if you didnt see him do it. HAVE NO FEAR!!!!!! ;) :) :sobstory:

You know not to handle him for 48 hours after he eats, right?

Excellent advice!! Think of eating a BIG Thanksgiving dinner... with pumpkin pie and chocolate cream pie and pecan pie and a few fancy Italian cookies with espresso .... your snake needs to digest a few days after a meal or it may regurg. :puke01:

I waited 24 hours, but next time I will wait longer. He seemed fine though, no regurgitation.

I would still wait 48 hours just to be on the safe side, thats what i do with ALL my snakes.
.
Also, we have 10 corn hatchlings right now and about 8/10 of them will strike at us the way you described. Its perfectly normal
