Corn snakes in NJ??

Wanted: Jasper Co Okeetee
Hello All,

I was just curious to see if there are any corn snakes in the Pine Barrens of New Jersey. I live about 30 mins away and was interested in taking my son to the Pines to look for some snakes in the spring. Is that a good time of year? Any suggestions to where to look..etc?

Thanks!

Howard

Yea...the Pines...

is where you would find them in NJ. Just watch out for the Jersey Devil, man!!! He's out there.

I'm not sure where you should look exactly

from what i've heard, thats about as far north as they can be found. im guessing just check under rocks and in dense leaf piles during this time of year

That's what I heard that they do come up just into NJ. I think it might be wise to wait until spring? or possibly early summer?

I have not been into the pine barrens but I have found two cornsnakes in the area. I live in south jersey near the walt whitman. One was in June and the other was in august. They are nice to look at just do not take any. ANd the same thing goes for pine snakes. Hefty fines for collecting both in Jersey.

I live right off I-95 in Bucks County...about 20 mins from the Walt Whitman. I don't plan on taking any, I just want my son ( 6 y/o) and I to look for some corns in the wild. He is really into reptiles and I thought it would be something cool to do.

I was not by any means accusing. If you took it that way I sincerely apologize. The two I saw were locate din gloucester county. One at woodbury heights lake, in a forested area. The other one was at chestnut ridge park in Mantua. That one surprised me, due to the fact it was sunning itself on a soccer field and my daughter found it.
THere are lots of places around, just getting fewer and fewer with the development of the area. And I am sure the oil spill will not be helping any for a while either. Good luck and keep us informed of your travels.

Oh NO! I didn't mean anything bad about what I said. You have no reason to apologize. I am just looking for a decent area to look for some snakes. As long as my boy finds one, either a corn or a pine. I was just looking for some places to go to look for some... :)

it's a really nice...

idea. definitely a very good father/son activity. i used to go camping in the pine barrens when i was a kid, it's a neat place.

Barrens

The Barrens, from what I hear is a wodnerful place to look for some of both. I however, just moved to jersey a few months ago and do not really know where the PIne Barrens are. County wise or even town. Can anyone help as far as that? Could be a nice trip for me and my daughter. THnaks

Remember, possesion of corn snakes in NJ is Illegal except for "red albinos". It's a well intentioned law, but that's as far as it goes.

Eddie, are you sure they were corns and not young eastern milks? The extent of the the known range for corns in NJ is pretty much limited to the Pine Barrens area of Southern NJ. Not that its impossible for corns to be in Mantua, but it wouldn't be expected. Corns are on the NJDEP endangered species list. Unfortunately, the state ignores the fact that corns are endangered in NJ due to habitat destruction, and the limited availability of that habitat in NJ. Corns are pretty much restricted to the sandy soils that are available in the Pine Barrens. I guess that as long as the builders continue to donate money to the politicians, the blame will be placed on reptile enthusiasts.

As for places to go, Batsto village is nice and easy to get to. In addition to going herping, you can check an 18th century bog ore village. Also, there use to be a place in Jenkins Neck that offered canoe trips down the Wading River. One of the trips was an overnighter. They dropped you off, and picked you up the next day. There was a place to camp along the way but you need to get a permit from the Wharton State Forest.

There are hiking trails through both the Lebanon and Wharton State Forests. Both of these offer great habitat for not only corns, but eastern milks, black rats, Northern Pine (also listed as endangered), ring neck snakes, and water snakes.

Good luck and have fun!

Mike

Hey Mike
I am about 99 percent sure that they are corns. Being originally from upstate NY, I am very familiar with the eastern milk. Just run of the mill regular cornsnakes. ANd it must also be taken into effect that in one of the places I found them is now under construction, so I have found many other of the snakes being pushed out. Especially water snakes since they really seem to want to build houses on swampy boggy ground. It is actually kind of sad.
I know about the law with corns and pines. Unfortunately i had to get rid of my northern pines or risk a 5000 dollar fine per snake in my posessions. As far as the red albinos go, if you hem and haw you can get the butters through okay, only because they do not have the dark eyes. BUt alas I still have a good collection of "rosy rat snakes" I could not bear to get rid of them all!
THanks for the info about the barrens. I really want to see a pine in its natural environment.
Ed

Very Good! Did you take pics? It is ashame all the building thats going on. My neck of the woods is pretty much built out, but I know there's a lot going on in the Mantua area. I saw an entire complex of Duplexes going up by the Motor vehicle inspection station, and your right, it looked like they were building it on a bog.
It appears there are a few of us from NJ here. We should start a club.

Mike

I have noticed a few Jersey/philly area people here. The jersey people are a little surprising considering the strict laws put upon cornsnake owners. BUt live and let live I guess. Talk to you soon
