covering flex watt in a cage

Hey guys, not sure if this belongs here or in the DIY forum.
I'm starting on a 4 level shelf type cage system. Each cage will be at least 36"L x 22"w x 15"H. I'm thinking about using the 11" flex watt. My question is this: Can I place the flex watt directly onto the wood bottom, and what do I cover it with so that the snake won't come into contact with it? I've read that it needs some spacing, but how would I do that in this situation? Can I cover it with some thin plexi glass and maybe drill air holes through it? (the plexi glass that is.)
I've done the searches, but everything seems to be written about rack systems where people are just placing tubs on top of the heat tape. Mine will be placed along the floor of the cages. Thanks for any help.

If I understand your question correctly I would use something like a floor tile. I think plexi glass is an insulater there a floor tile would transfer the heat better.

Yes, the wood is too thick to put it under the bottom like you would a glass tank, so it's going to have to be on top of the wood inside the cage. I was thinking maybe covering it with tile or some 1/8" plexiglass, but was wondering if i should drill holes in it 1st for ventilation. Also, whats the best way to hold the tile or plexigass in place? Should I silicone it down, or maybe put screws in each corner?

I would get some silver tape it is found in the A/C duct section of the Hardware store and tape the flex watt to the bottom of the floor tile.

Then I would find 4 of some type of an 1/8 inch spacer like a washer or piece of wood and glue the them to the 4 corners of the tile.

I would then screw 4 small wood blocks next to the tile so the tile could not move. That way you would have air flow around the flex watt and be able to remove the tile to clean it.
