Just waiting for mine to arrive. We (as in "my friend who understood my bad sketches !") have used melamine for sides, top and floor, a paving-effect flooring material (hardboard based with plastic textured coating) for the back, with toughened glass sliding doors rather than plexiglass (understand glass is more scratch resistant ?).
The vivs have two main shelves, all melamine cut to size, plus two smaller shelves. All put together with screws as far as possible and not adhesive. Added bonus of doing this is that you can flat-pack them if you have to move them any distance. The facing strips of melamine are self-adhesive, but I have several melamine vivs and these facing strips have been used on all of them without ill-effects. Only point I can think of is I'm guessing the glass runners will have been attached with glue.
Have fun !
