damaged scale - shed problem

New member
Hi everybody,
about month ago my snake had damaged one of his scales on the top of the head.
I hoped it will be replaced by the new one after shedding. yesterday he did shed properly except a bit of a skin on the damaged scale. old skin is still there!
Could any body help me? I’m not sure what I should do. Should I live it or maybe try to peel it off? Thanks for any help.

Normally when snakes have trouble shedding, Shed aid can be used, damp paper towels etc.. but if an injury has caused this the answer could be entirley different??

The injury looks like it is quite deep.. have you visited the vets?

Vetadine mixed with water is a good treatment for healing wounds on snakes, still, Im not sure by what you have said, if, this snake has had an incomplete shed before this one? where the skin on the head has remained ?

There will be people on here that will have more experience than me, when it comes to things like this, hopefully they will be able to advise a bit better..

p.s I wouldnt try to pull it off just yet, wait & see what everyone else says... if you do you could cause more damage...

:wavey:

thanks for quick responce. he had a bed shedding last time but i made sure i got rid of any skin remains. it seemed like he pull back his head and lift the scale tip. then i couple days he lost it completely. i did not go to vet as it seemed to be just damaged scale with signs of any infection.

I've seen this sort of thing before. I'd clip off that trailing bit of shed skin and leave the rest. That wound is fairly deep, but from the photos it looks to be clean. It will heal, but it will take several sheds, and there will be a scar. A little bit of Betadine first aid cream might be helpful but is not mandatory. Good luck.

I agree. Betadine was the first thing that came to my mind when I saw the pic. Better safe than sorry. I have good luck with snake oil to treat bad sheds on my lizard. It is all natural and smells great. :)

thanks a mill everybody. it turned out to be harmless damage. it has been 2 sheds since and it almost healed. I'll post some pictures for future reference. maybe will help to answer somebody's question.
p.s. thanks megF.
