Different method of killing?

Hey everyone..
This person told me a quick and painless way to kill small animals might be by pushing a needle into their spinal cord, just below the head. Does anyoen know about this?

Also ... em, this is going to sound very crude, but isnt it easy to break their necks? :shrugs:

Inserting a needle through the atlanto-occipical space into the spinal cord is called pithing and disrupts the spinal cord at the base of the skull. They use it on amphibians for studying physiology, etc. Just puncturing/lacerating the spinal cord is called single pithing. Double pithing involves directing the needle up through the foramen magnum (hole that the cord exits) and damaging the brain by moving the needle around, then pithing the cord.

I wouldn't consider it a humane way to euthanize, and certainly wouldn't like to perform the procedure on a fully conscious mammal (although some do use it on amphibians in dissection/physiology labs).

My personal opinion, of course. Cervical dislocation ("neck-breaking") requires less skill to perform properly and requires less restraint. Since we aren't studying physiologic responses in our feeders, I'd consider pithing unnecessary.

um yeah it would work but couldnt it like kep the mouses head alive but sorta paralize the body sort of the same thing when someone snapes there neck?

i hope this does not offend anyone but when i used to go hunting (the old fashon way ferits and nets). when we cought a rabbit we used to just snap there necks. this way the rabbit would just simply die with no paid well thats what i was lead to think anyway i dont beleave it causes no pain but this method probily didnt hurt as much as some because its over in litrally less than a second.

it's just that I don't think I could bring myself to do it.. they're just cute with their twitchy little noses... braking necks is so not my thing..!

You can use CO2 or Chloroform, those are painless, in fact, with CO2, you have to be careful because if you get too close, you could knock yourself out!
