Emperor Scorpions

So, After realising I can't afford another snake, Emperor scorpions caught my eye. I have a 22Gal tank in which I hope to house 2, I've been reading over the past couple of days and hope someone can confirm that I've read the right things ..

So

Heat mat should go on the side of the tank because emperors burrow to escape heat, and if it were on the bottom, well, it wouldn't be much help.

Temperature anywhere between 75 and 90F. Humidity between 80 and 90% (Daily misting)

4-6 Inch of substrate for burrowing, and a decent selection of hides.

A shallow, open top water dish which is easy to get in/out of.

UV light can kill the scorpion ..

Handling not recomended, Pediphals can draw blood, sting similar to that
of a bee, but if your allergic it can ba bad/fatal.

Feed 2/3 Crickets a week, occasionally dusted with a calcium supplement.
Also inverts/mammals smaller than that of the scorpion can be fed as a sort of "treat" every so often (pinkies, mealworms etc.)

Clean the tank every 4-6 months.

Stress can kill.

Can anyone correct/extend on what I have typed so far?

Also what substrate is readily available in a packet? I've been looking at coconut chips/husks, are they OK?

Again, please correct anything that needs correcting!

sounds good! I hear the excavator substrate can work for them if left a little more dry than the instructions say. If not sand should work. For my bearded I put on of the tree bark hides in the bottom of the tank and put the substrate in after and she digs out the hole under the bark to burrow. might work for scorps as well as I know they are opportunistic when it comes to burrows.

I'm not the biggest fan of emporers but love the red claws which look similar.

if you do get them, I'd love to see pics

I wouldn't house together, but then again, I have never owned a scorpion. My friend chris had two housed together and one killed the other.

Yup, I understand all of the risks, but most if not all sites I've visited have said it's very rare.

I'd recommend housing seperately, but I know people that house together with great sucess.

Heat mats didn't work for me to well, so from personal ecperience I would recommend a 50 watt IR (infrared) heat bulb. I like to keep single scorps in five gallon tanks. Ecoearth (expandable cocnut fiber) bedding works well.

i had mine housed together and i think one got pregnant and not too long after died i didnt get a chance to figure out the cause of death and the second one died alittle less then a year later i think that one was from old age he was full grown when i got him

I think it is a size/species thing with canabalism in scorps. Or if one isn't used to living with another that you have the issue.

Best Wishes!

And show us some love with a few pics if you can!

Emps usually do well together but you will get babies if you have a pair together. There is always a possibilty of fights, just make sure they are the same size and have more then one hidding spot.
I like using eco earth for them, it holds moisture well and is easy to dig in. A UTH should be ok unless your house is really cold.
I'm not sure about using calcium either, you might want to double check with that on arachnoboards.com

:saluting smiley: Thanks people!

I was planning on little babies, a bit later on, but I've divided the tank for now.

Waldo, I joined the arachnoboards last week or so, but havn't really had time to visit it.
