Escapee

Hydra escaped at some point today (I was out 9-7) but I found him which is the important thing [emoji23] he's warming up in his hot hide now but has some scales that have obviously been damaged on his adventure. I'll attach some pictures and I think they should clear up with his next shed. The only one I'm concerned about is the very top layer of a scale on his head has almost came off (no blood or open wound) and I wanted to make sure this was okay

The other thing is preventing anymore escapes. I know he got out by pulling one of the vents in the tank off the wall and then climbing out. I've currently got them covered with cardboard and ducttaped down but this block of his air vents so it's not the best. I don't want to super glue the vents down incase I need to take them out to change probes/thermostats because all he cables run through these vents. I'll attach pictures so it's easier to see what I mean [emoji4]

So I just need a better way to stop him from escaping really, any help is appreciated!

I'm so glad you found him. All else aside he is a beautiful snake. He should heal in a shed or two.

As to closing the escape route, I'm not sure how he got out of that vent. Did he go out the cord hole or the vent itself? I might consider stapling window screening, with the staples overlapping on the outside, but without knowing exactly what happened it is difficult to say.

Thanks, he's very beautiful! That's good that he'll heal up just fine.

The vents aren't secured in, you can pull them out easily so he must of climbed and balanced on the top of the vent that sticks out into the tank and then managed to pull it out. Like this -

Probably any kind of bracket that you can screw into the cage but obviously short screws as not to penetrate into the Viv, and this way you can either pivot the brackets out of the way or just unscrew them if you need access

Okay, thank you!! I'll look into finding some brackets and stuff this week, I hadn't thought of that! [emoji4]

Good thing you posted that here. I know this style viv is popular in the UK. That is a major weak point and it is good to make it known to prevent more escapes! I had no idea that the vent was not secured in place.

Yeah, it's a vivexoctic which I think is the most common over here, especially for display vivs. I had no idea he'd be able to get the vents off, especially the top one. Least I found him and can work on securing it now!

Hahaha yes that would be a very good quick fix, could be permanent in theory I just wouldn't trust it forever especially since now he knows that vent means out lol

And people say snakes aren't intelligent. Your picture of him balanced up the side of the viv shows both intelligence and determination. Good thing they don't have thumbs! Lol:rofl:
