Beautiful everglades! I love fox snakes, is your little guy a western?

Yeah its a western. Mom was given to me as a wc and she produced a clutch of eggs for me. I gave away most of the hatchlings and kept 3 for myself to grow out.

A few pictures of mom.

She was actually Gravid in these photos and didn't even look it.

Is the everglades rat the same as a yellow rat snake?
I've been interested in yellow rats and some of the ads I see around look just like the Everglades pic you posted with the pretty orange coloring and all.

Sorry did some quick research and found:

Pure Everglades rat snakes are becoming rare in the wild due to the expansion of the yellow rat snake (Elaphe obsoleta quadrivittata) into Southern Florida. The yellow rat has been interbreeding with the Glades rat to produce much darker individuals than those typical of the pure Glades form.

I see you found it.

One way to tell if you have a pure Everglades, the tongue is pink....if it has any black at all there was Yellow Ratsnake somewhere in the lineage.
