Exo Terra Heatwave

Hi all,
I would like to know if any of the users of the Exo Terra Heatwave Under Tank Heater understand why my heater doesn't seem to produce any heat. It's plugged in yet when I put my hand on the glass above the UTH it is not warm at all. It is not that big of a concern, it has been like this since I got the snake about 3 months ago, and the snake is doing fine. I just want to make sure that its not broken or if there is something special i need to do to get it working. Thanks for any help

It sounds like your UTH is defective. Mine is very warm when you put your hand on the glass. I haven't used the one you are referring to though, I would take the other back if you still have the receipt.

must be defective

i use the exo terra heatwave UTH and mine gets HOT. so hot that i had to get a thermostat to regulate it. it was getting above 100f, which felt obviously warm to the touch, but not unbearably hot.

sounds to me like it might not be working properly.

Yeah I can still get mine off the tank. I wonder how my snake's been living so long with out heat. Anyways, I will probably return it or try to get something in the way of lighting.

I use the exo terra heat pads. Most of them are warm, but not hot. The larger one that is on my blue tonge skinks enclosure gets quite hot. It's on a rheostat. The smaller ones are just warm. In fact, I started using the exo terras because I always found the zoo med ones to be too hot.

Any heating element needs to be on a thermostat. It is not a matter of if they get hot, they will overheat and kill the animal in the cage. This is especially true of corns since there heating requirements are lower than say a ball python. Also thank about your body temp when you feel some thing. You surface temp on your hands will generally be about 85-90 degrees so if the heat pad is 89 it will not feel that warm to the touch. You need to check it with a raytek or a digital thermometer...Safe not sorry..

I agree. I recently bought one of those thermometers that you point and click (can't remember what you call them...lol) from Radio Shack. I only used it for about a month and though I believe it still 'works', it has become defective in that you can no longer read the numbers on the display. :( So now I need to get a new one but from somewhere else this time. Anyway, during the short time I was using it I found it very helpful with the undertank heat pads.

Can you take it back? I beleive you can return things to Radio shack for 90 days, I could be wrong.. Get yourself a raytek.. Awseom stuff...

where do i get a raytek? I was going to get one from Pro Exotics (Chad Brown). I was hoping his would be better than the one from Radio Shack.

Does any one use T-Rex brand?

I got the t-rex uth and the description says it works differently, using ultra long wavelength infrared heat "and tends to heat furnishings in the cage rather than the air. This action of heating is very similar to the sun and it has the ability to heat anything that it strikes but with the air temperature remaining much lower. Reptiles absorb this heat in a manner very similar to basking in a natural environment. Heat mats do get warm but provide a very gentle warmth which the animal can sit under or on top of. Used under normal conditions, the mats cannot burn the animal." I took that off petco website. Any truth to the above. Anyone else use this and find it any good. I'm still new to this all. Also, I will be going to a Reptile expo this weekend, what is the best thermometer to get?
