Snakes and more Snakes
I posted the other night how I thought my Ball Python may have Mites. Well I checked tonight and after looking him over I found nothing. Well I went to clean out his tub and there were def. MITES. I found them in the waterdish dead and very tiny ones crawling on the tub. When I squished them they oozed blood. SO now I need help!

1. Whats the best method for getting rid of them safely?

2. How to I keep them from Spreading to my other snakes?

3. Should I treat my other 10 cornsnakes who are all in the same rack?

Any Help would be great, right now I have bleached down his entire tub again replaced his water with fresh and he is soaking in warm water. I cant find any on him or his face but that doesnt mean they are not there whats the best way to make sure they are not there!

P.S. The Cornsnake manual mentions Sevin dust, any ideas where I could get this locally and if its ok to dust all my snakes after cleaning there tubs to make sure they have no mites???

THANKS IN ADVANCE
Sorry its about a BP and Not just a Cornsnake

Well I soaked the BP and found nothing really in the water after a 20 min soak. Tomarrow after work I am gonna clean out all tubs and soak each cornsnake and inspect all of them. I think I will get a pest strip to hang on the outside of the rack just in case. But is there something safe that I could spray/dust on my snakes to make sure its gone. Or to prevent it?? Also is soaking a good method?? Tomarrow I will try the adding soap method. And do a daily soak on the BP to make sure hes good and clean!

I am having this problem right now with my snakes, all of them except the hypo has had a few mites. I went to a pet store and got "Reptile Relief" it worked great but I need to use it again on all of them.

You should clean out the cages and use anti mite/tick solutions clean all hides wipe down all snakes you might think will have the mites.
Good luck

Whats your substrate?

If they were in the viv, but not on the snake, chances are it's something off the substrate (wood mites etc) rather than something thats infested the snake.

I'd still do a full clean out, and get the substrate sorted, just less of a worry if it's substrate mites as they're usually not a problem for the animal.

Well I use aspen for the substrate for all my snakes. Im removing all of them from it today and gonna bleach each enclosure and everything that goes in it besides water dishes which I will use a soap for. Then I think I will use Dans NIX solution. Thanks For that Thread Im printing it off and going shopping, and hope to have mites gone in no time. Im also cleaning the carpets tonight and everything thats in the room. So to clear out any potential creepy crawlers. I think I will use the Nix treatment on all snake stuff to keep mites from coming back as long as it works to get rid of them!

Oh a Question about that, it says its ok for the face will it hurt the eyes??? And what about hatchlings? I have a friend who is giving me 2 hatchling females next week should I spray them or just keep them isolated???

THANKS!!!
Amanda

BBaby I'm not trying to steel into your thread but I need to Know. How do they get mites, anyway? How are they introduced?

Personally, I'd use Sevin dust instead of nix everytime.

I had a mite problem a while back and used sevin dust---no such problem since. Totally wiped them right out.

I've been told that you can sprinke a small amount of sevin dust into substrate as a preventitive against mites.

Provent-a-mite spray is also very effective as well. I will definitely swear by it. Any time I have a mite problem, I use it and within about a day or 2 of using it, voiala... G-O-N-E. :)

Not to be a jerk, but I'm going to have to counter that:
I'd use Nix instead of Sevin (everytime;))

I'm a big fan of Dave's Nix solution, and use it on all my personal snakes and all my snakes at work too (of which there are many). In response to your question about hatchlings, I've used Nix on hatchlings many times (and on many species) with no ill effects.

Also, there shouldn't be any worries about getting it in their eyes because the operculum (eye cap) effectively protects they eye, which you probably already know.:)

best of luck with getting rid of them. I'd treat everyone in your collection just to be on the safe side. Hope all goes well for you. :)

Ask Your Repti-Vet

You know you can ask your reptile vet for a solution with Ivomectin in it to spray in the tank and on your snake. :)
