Feeder Rabbits For Ball Pythons?

Allalaskan

The Crazy Alaskan
Ok, so lately I have been thinking about raising a colony of rats for my snakes. I also though have been thinking about raising rabbits for Meat (Home grown or wild harvested food, something I try to do when I can) and got to thinking, could young rabbits be used for feeders.

I have 2 Ball pythons and one corn snake. Granted I am just now starting to research this, but from what I have seen new born Rabbits arent much if any bigger then an adult mouse. If they are then Its not a big deal for the corn snake (Think I would rather keep him on mice any way) but I was thinking I could breed meat rabbits for meat and also kill off some young ones to feed my Ball pythons.

Any one here use rabbits to feed Ball Pythons? Any pros or cons? I would think this way I could kill and freeze the kits when they are at the correct sizes for the BPs. I just figured if I get Meat rabbits and start breeding for meat then maybe it would also work for feeding my Pythons.

So what do you all think? Can I kill 2 birds with one stone or are their any downfalls to feeding rabbit kits I should be aware of.

I was thinking like 1-5 day old kits. If they are to big then thats just the way it is. I figured this would be a good place to ask around.

That would probably be okay, then. If you're raising them for your family, anyway. Ours are eating anywhere from small to medium-ish rats as fully grown adults.

Ya I am not sure if im going to do it or not but it was a thought that crossed my mind. Its still all up in the air.

I don't see why you would elect to feed a bp young rabbits. Cost-wise it would make no sense.

Im looking to possibly breed them for meat to eat and also feed the snakes with them. Im not looking to breed only to feed the snakes.

Yeah I understand that. Just my two sense... but rearing a rabbit for self-consumption is obviously more financially beneficial than feeding newborn kit to a snake that could very well eat a rodents.

Rabbits are rodents :p (sorry had to lol) but I get what your saying. It was just a thought that had crossed my mind.

But yeah, ethics aside, just work out the costs to raise and the amount of return you'll get a each life stage. It just seems like a waste of rabbit to feed it to a bp.

Ya your most likely right. I wasnt dead set on it, it was just something I was thinking about earlier. I will most likely just get a small rat colony for the snakes.

You should also try and put a monetary value on your sense of smell before you decide because rats smell WAY worse than rabbits. :grin01:

I think the rabbits are a decent idea. With rats you'll only have one use whereas with the rabbits they are feeding your snakes and you... unless... you aren't gonna eat the rats too are ya'? ;)

Lmao!! You aint never heard of Rat stew? hahahaha.

I wouldn't even BOTHER with this with the BP/s you have. Garbage gut BPs are exceptions while the species is generally quite picky, and if they decide they like something better than something else, they'll wait a very, very long time for that item.

I agree. If the balls find they like the rabbits, they may never take rats again! Unless you plan on doing this for the rest of their days, I don't reccomend it!

Then again, balls are picky creatures of habit...they may not take them in the first place if they are digging rats right now!
