feeding in a sterilite tub

after learning more (thanks to this forum) i just fed my amel in a sterilite tub. my mom picked it up at the dollar store, shes going to buy me a few more. they are $1.. kind of cheap lid, the sides can be pryed a little but im going to use binder clips.

my question is, after he completely consumes the mouse, how long should i wait before transfering him back to his home? do i pick him up, if so should i do it a certain way? or.. should i kind of lower the sterilite tub into his home and let him crawl out? thanks alot!

I wait about 30 min before i transfer them back to there tank. You can tell by looking at them if the bulge has gotten done far enough from the mouth. Once you see the bulge get down past the neck area towards the belly you should be ok.

My method of getting them out of there feeding container is to just tilt it into there tank and kinda gently slid them out while giving it a little shake or so to get them heading in the right direction. All my snakes now know when its time. I take the lid off the container and tilt it and usally they slid out thereselves and under the nearest hide.

i just gentally pick mine up at the spots right before and after the bumps. it works fine for me never had a regurge and i do it once the lump stops moveing

hiya guys...1st post!

Silly question about seperate feedings..

Is there a size of container ya need to feed them in?? Smaller better or do I give them a bit of room to move??

Thanks!
Dave

I would put the snake inside the feeding tub, inside his tank, and secure the tank. Some of those sterilites can easily be escaped, even with clips... there are about 50 different designs anymore, so I don't know which one you have. Either way, this eliminates the risk of him escaping... if he does, he's still locked in his escape-proof home. :)

When he's done, you can tilt him out of the tub, pick him up to move him, or just pull the top off and let him leave when he feels like it. :)

Also, don't sit him on the hot side over/under the heat source.

reason being, I have a hatchling coming and I dont want to freak him out in to large a container

Dave
Hatchlings do well in those little gladware 4-inch square thingies, or in the little 3 inch deli cups. It keeps them from wandering away from the food item. ;)

It all depends on the snake. but with hatching I think it better in a small container of some sort. I just feed my new hatching in the deli cup it came in, with a little paper towel and secure the lid on. Don't disturb it before atempting to feed. Keep it qute and dark. If you are gettinh a new one, dont handle for four days or so. Let it settle in first. Then you can try to feed a pinky. But no handling for two days after feeding.

Good luck

1st post

hi everyone,

these may sound like dum questions but im new and was wonderin if someone could post a pic of wut a god viv looks like? :shrugs:

also i was wonderin wut size viv would u recomend for a yearling, also wut should i have in my viv?

thnks :flames:

There are several threads that show various vivs / cages. A search on it (above) will give you some great ideas.
As far as size goes - I have my yearling in a 15 gal aquarium and will move her up to a 20 gal in the next 6 months. Most of mine are hatchlings and are in a rack system in sterilte shoe boxes (Tub Size....14½Lx8Wx4¼H) and will move up to larger boxes (23½x17x6 = 32qt) as they get older.
In the cage you will need :
1) a substrate material like aspen shavings (my choice) or, newspaper, paper towel, repti-bark ect...( you can search on 'substrate' for additional info. )
2) a heat source --like a heat lamp or under tank heater. One side of the tank/viv should be warmer with the substrate in the 83-86 degree (f) range --needed to help them digest their food. The other side should be cooler with temps in the 72-76 degree range. (If you chose the UTH you'll need at thermostat to regulate the temps - when I set mine up without it the substrate in the warm side got to 110 degrees - ouch.)
3) a digital thermometer with a probe - (I got a cheap one at Wal-Mart for $6.00 and it works well). Put the probe in the substrate on the warm side to keep an eye on the actual temp at 'snake level'.
4) A water dish
5) A hide - preferably 2, one on the warm side and one on the cool side - to allow the snake to feel secure and be able to choose.
6) A corn snake
These items can be as simple or as complex as you wish, but will take care of the snakes basic needs. I think that's everything...I'm sure others will respond as well.
I hope this help!

Also - I really enjoyed Kathy Love's Book - Corn Snakes - The Comprehensive Owner's Manual - it, and the forum here gave me all the information I needed to get started and are a great! Here is the link: www.cornutopia.com - just click on the Books area.

wow thnks alot debcash that will be alot of help

sry but more questions from mr questions cus im thinkin of getin a snake and tryin to decide wut, so far though corn seems best

question, how do u keep the cool side between 72-76 degrees?

and also should my viv have climbing areas(branches e.t.c) or will that make my viv to crowded?

thnks again :flames:

I absolutely stink at trying to get them back in their deli cups. My wife finds these peanut containers at the local wholesale club. They have a screw lid and work great.

Mr. question -
I'll be happy to give you additional info but you probably should start a new thread of your own for the additional questions, that way you can get additional resposes to your specific questions and we aren't taking over someone elses thread.
Thanks!

On the home page, go to Husbandry and Basic care and in the upper left corner it says New Thread. Click on it and you're on your way.
