Hey guys, I'm looking into building a rack out of Melamine. I found a guy selling 1/2"X '4 X 8' sheets for $10 apiece. He says it fiber core Melamine, is that what i want?
Medium Density Fiber Core Hardwood Plywood (MDF)
MDF is made from fine wood dust mixed with a binder and heat-pressed into panels. The sheets can be sold as-is, or a veneer skin, like oak or maple, can be laid up on the sheet. (The veneered sheet is the most common form, but blank MDF sheets are available as Paint-Grade)
if it's similair to the particle board then just make sure you coat it with polyeurothane really well or it will get wet and drastically expand and fall apart. It's a huge catch 22 because it looks great and the price is great but if you don't treat it right it could break and fall apart after a couple years just from absorbing moisture from inside the vivarium. Also a lot of it uses soft wood like pine and cedar for the sawdust so that can be a problem as well.
