Im gonna keep the copperhead.. its a little female.. i need a male now for a project.. to my suprise she ate a mouse within 30 mins of capture!

I love those water snakes... I caught some copperheads not too long ago and considered a project but decided against it because I know my propensity to hold the babies while forgetting they are poisonous lol...

Well if you are going to keep anything venomous as an amature herper in the US from wild caught stock a Copperhead would be the way to go. Coral may be less likely to lay a good bite on ya but a copperhead is the least toxic of all our venomous snakes in North America. That said (and I speak from experience) their bite is NO FUN :eatsmiley.

In fact in all my years the only snake I ever killed was a copperhead. I had already been bit before (on the calf, stepped on her it was not her fault) so I knew the drill. I was out small game hunting early in the season in PA. Usually in PA by hunting time the snakes are sleeping for the winter but I slid down a very steep slate bank and landed a few inches from a very puffed and angry copperhead. 80 degree bank behind me, briars to the left, drop off the the right, snake to the front and a 20 gauge with 6 shot, well I hated to do it but :uzi:

So be careful with them, they are beautiful animals though. I found a very young one while fishing one time, she was gorgous (in my best Steve Irin voice) and I was tempted to keep her. We must all know our own limits and being detailed and proceedural is not one of mine so I took her off away from our fishing spot and let her go.

Nice finds sounds like a great day just be careful handeling hots and be sure they are secure,

Yea there beautiful animals. Im very familiar with hots.. ive kept at least a couple dozen Viperidae over the years.. ive sold most of my collection off though.. Still have my local timber.

I'm close to Wake Forest/ Raleigh....mostly this year just seen a lot of water snakes, everyone else sees copperheads, but apparently they are hiding from me.....out of the venemous of NC Copperheads are probably the only ones that I would keep.

Cool deal man ill check ya out.. will you have a banner with westexherps?
If you ever heading my way.. give me a email or message me.. i have some really great areas local to go herping.. mainly kings mtn.. and local around my house. I see all kind of herps at Kings mtn, im like a lil kid in a candy store! :crazy02:

Yes, the banner will look just like my avatar. If there is anything that you are looking for in particular just email me and let me know. The last six months I haven't had time to do much of anything except with the snakes/business but if I ever do decide to go down there I will def. let you know. Raleigh and the areas around it are getting so busy the only snakes that we usually see are the ones that have been hit....

Those are nicely marked water snakes, the ones I've seen out here (Dare/Hyde County) aren't nearly so nice. There are a ton of snakes out here, I've seen 3 Timber Rattlesnakes in the 2 months I've worked out here. Didn't have my camera with me, it goes with me everywhere now though. Hopefully I'll get some pics of one soon.
