woooowww my snake today constricted its pray for the first time. it was a fuzzy, a bit bigger then usual. he attacked with such a rush and then he whirled up around it and wow i'm amazed. it's been 5 months i'm with my corn and it's the first time he does that. i even started a thread a while ago asking why he wouldnt constrict. i hope he does next time too.. do you think he will? is your corn doing that every time he's fed?

just wanted to share :) :eatsmiley

my corn doesnt constrict until its already in its mouth, although i think he does it more to maybe break bones so it goes easier, or for a better grip on it, and i dont think he constricts very tight when he does it cause he only does it about when about 1/4 of his food is in his mouth already

Aphrodite just snatches the fuzzy off the small tongs and drops it with her mouth on it and starts to take it it.

Ares snatches the fuzzy and constricts it even though it's already dead... he will have his mouth over the mice's nose and is wrapped up around him.. he sits like that with it for a few and then starts taking it in.

He doesn't do it every time.. mostly when he is anxious to eat.

Our one adult constricts maybe half the time. The other just kinda opens up and starts swallowing (he's constricted once...after a zombie dance). The young ones? None of them constrict. Only one of them strikes reliably...mostly because I dance hers. The rest just open up and start swallowing. (everyone but the adults are on fuzzy-size mice)

Yippee! Had the same over here too! My okeetee girl graduated to her first hopper today. She wasn't quite sure what to do so first she tried the open mouth routine but didn't feel right about it, so then she sort of climbed on top of it like a pillow for a few minutes while she thought about her game plan, then decided constricting was the best option. Very cool to watch because nobody else here is doing it yet! :)

My milk snake constricts about 15% of the time, but hes only two years old.

My adult corns however attack with vigor in an attempt to "kill" their mice. I have a few observations to note about this.

When I originally did the zombie dance, the mouse was standing on its head, vertically. I tried the "levitating zombie" as well. Neither of these get super aggressive strikes.

However, if I tease the snakes by dragging the mouse around the bottom of the enclose, as if it were scurrying around, I get fantastic strikes. Small movements that are more like twitches seem to seal the deal once the general scurrying gets the snakes attention.

It may be worth a try for those not getting consistent "strike and coil" action. Not that there is anything wrong with the snake not doing so but...

what happened was that he was asleep in his hide. i poked him with the mouse and maybe the surprise effect+ the larger prey made the constriction happen. i'm curious to see if he does it again next week!

My snakes must be lazy. They very slowly take the mouse by the nose and start swallowing. They've never been fed live and I dont do any special moves when I feed them so I guess they've never felt the need. :)

I'm about to show my ignorance, but....

Mine doesn't constrict at all, and because of this, I had no idea corn snakes were even considered constrictors! I don't know what else they would be, but I guess I didn't think about it much. It wasn't until I saw threads on here regarding the matter that it dawned on me.

I wonder if mine ever will? I have a feeling he probably won't. No need to expend energy when it's unnecessary!

well, snakes kill by constriction or by venom. it's gotta be one of those two. imagine in the wild, with a live prey. how would they kill the prey? certainly not biting :)

mine never constricted before.. i guess they constrict if they sense the prey may be alive and/or dangerous.

The trick is to make them FEEL like they need to expend the energy. Once u have their attention, make them fear dinner may escape. I think that's a part of why I get mine to do it so often...
