First feeding

I purchased my 1st snake on Friday 3/3/06 and was told that it had last fed 2 days before and to leave it 5 days before feeding again. So yesterday was the day.Got my frozen pinkie put it in warm water for 15mins and fed him.
Although he's been near it a few times he's made no attempt to eat it.Whilst I'm not too concerned about him not eating yet I need to know how long to leave the food in there before it starts to go off and when to try feeding again

A question, are you feeding in his viv?
If so then it would be a good idea to start feeding in a seperate container, this prevents ingestion of substrate, as well as giving the snake a good signal as to when it's time to eat.
Usually people say leave it out overnight. I've never had to leave my snakes with food for longer than 2 hours, so I don't know when it will go off.
I always start out by dangling the prey item above the snake so that the snake sees it moving as well as smelling it, this usually illicets a strike and quick eating.

5 minitues for a pinkie should be long enough. 15 may be overcooking it.
You can leave it overnight if you need to. A good idea would be to put him in a different container with a piece of paper or papertowel down in it. Then put the pinkie in and you can wiggle it to get his attention. This scares some though, judge for yourself. Don't worry if he doesn't eat the first time. Tell us how things go!

I have found turning off the lights or putting a blanket over the 'feeding viv'. I've done this once or twice if he ain't grabbed it out of my fingers. Usually eaten within 30mins, once up to 3hrs. I guess some snakes just like privacy...?

I have one reluctant eater. Usually I will put him in a deli cup with a f/t pink. I cover the cup with a cloth and put it in a dark room. It can take him several hours to eat but he has only refused once. I brained a pink just to see last feeding and he took it in a matter of seconds :crazy02: . I guess he likes that better lol.

With my new baby, the first couple times I fed her I actually held her in my hand and conveniently positioned her mouth on top of the pink. As soon as she was right there next to it she bit. Then I just set her down gently and let her finish eating.

At such a young age she is a bit too unsure of her feeding container (which she is only in every 5 days) to understand it is where she finds food and go looking. A little assistance and encouragement is all it takes sometimes.
