First time Snake Parent

Thought that instead of lurking on the forum, that I would introduce myself.

I have been a snake lover since I was a child and always wanted one, but the Mom always said NO!!! I would spend entire days in the woods, grass lands, and bush hunting Garter Snakes. The one day that I brought one home my Mom freaked and made me release it.

I finally bought my first snake a few weeks ago. I beleive that it is a male, as there appear to be more than 70 pairs of scales on the tail after the anal split (he won't hold still long enough for me to tell) He is an Anery with very nice irridescent scales. I am not sure how old he is, as the pet store did not know, he is about 18" in length and very timid. He spends most of his time in his hide or burrowed in the substrate. He is a healthy eater, taking 2 pinkies a week, I am considering moving him up to fuzzies as his last pinky bulge was gone in a day.

I will post pictures of him later, I have hassled him enough already today.

Thanks to all the knowledgeable people here for sharing their experiences and advice.

Welcome to the site!

FYI, counting scales is much easier when getting a perfect shed . . . the shed doesn't move around! :) Also, subtract the tail number from the chin to cloaca number. Generally, equal to or less than 154 tends towards male, greater than 154 tends towards female. The further away from 154 in either direction, the more likely that gender. I've done this with most of my adults and subadults, and with just a few minor exceptions, it works.

Now I just have to wait for a shed.
Yeah, I know the feeling . . . just don't forget and throw it away . . . and then remember you were going to count scales . . . I've done that before too! :eek1:
