i just wired my first rack. i soldered the wires to the flexwatt, and am using a dimmer to control the heat. now here's my question...the cost of 1 foot of 12" flexwatt (3.80), a dimmer (2.50) and wire (1.25) i could just made a single heat pad that i can control for roughly 7 bucks. how does this compare to the repti-therm and other commercial heat pads they sell for over 20 dollars? if its just as good i can do this for whatever i need and it's so versatile without having to go to the store and buying a 20 dollar heat pad if i'm buying a new snake i want to keep in an aquarium instead of the rack..
 
im talking about personal use man.
the point of doing it yourself is that you invest your time to make something instead of paying for it; which i rather do 100% of the time
 
now add in the cost of polyurethane laminate to make it more moisture resistant, built in regulation as to not require the dimmer, and let me know the cost...

i'm too big of an ultratherm fan to go with flexwatt
 
I get my Zoomed mini uth's at the Petsmart website for $10.99 (free shipping), which is a lot cheaper than in the stores. I wish I wasn't electrically challenged or I would make my own.
 
yeah, someone gave me 12 feet of 11" flexwatt for free so why not. i used 6 for my rack so i have 6 feet left to play with...
 
man, that was EXACTLY what i was thinking!

Hahaha !!! Excellent logic :cheers: I totally agree... Flexwatt / rack space left over = need more snakes !!!
 
go with the homemade setup. i purchased a uth from the pet store - can't remember the brand. it was supposed to be self regulated and not go over 95F I think. Temp gun showed it running at 125F. :flames:
