hello...its a longgggggggggggggg story and im really exausted . so ill just stick to the question


is it ok if i buy medium sized mice and cut them in half and feed a half to a 5 month corn snake.

the size is perfect for it.

but is it ok..

dont ask me why i dont buy small ones or anything like that please.

just tell me if its ok for a corn snake to eat like half of a medium sized mouse thank you very much

and another question

when my snake eats its food.
some of the astroturf gets stuck on it.i remove it but what if it ate it.what happens?

Am not sure about the first part of the question but

Personally, I find astro turf to be VERY dangerous! :) Lots of people use it with fine results but just last month I remember a person talking about how their snake got seriously caught in the threads. You have to be very careful about astro turf threading and fraying as it presents a huge danger to all reptiles. A foot, tail or anything can get twisted in it.

If he ingests enough astro turf he could get seriously impacted.

I don't see why that would be a problem. It might be hard to chop a frozen mouse in half though. I suppose you could wait for it to thaw and then chop it in half
although some people have doubts about refreezing mice, I haven't had any problems with that as long as the mice have only been out for like 1 or 2 hours.

An alternative to prevent your snake from eating astroturf is feeding him in a separate container. Take a shoebox, put the mouse in, put the snake in, close the lid. wait, slowly and gently take snake out, put snake back in tank.

Couldn't...

...the bones from the cut up mouse cause internal injury to the snake? It could get stuck on the way down, or poke through the esophagus. I'd be really careful!
 
im really confused now

about that astroturf . well its not like the normal ones its just like a ,,umm carpet . if you know what i mean. its not the ones that look like small spikes

Help you how? Just buy smaller mice. I know you said you didn't want to but frankly when you have a snake or any pet you have to buy what it needs. And you have to buy small mice.

I agree that it most likely won't be the best idea to be cutting them in half. They would only be getting half a meal each time.

well

i try to buy small mice but i cant cause i cant find any cause they closed 2 petshops and only one is left they barely get fuzzies or pinkies they store them somewhere till they get big enough then they sell them. i tried to talk to a guy that works there to convince him to sell all sizes. he said they tried but they couldnt.

anyway ,,,hehe,,sorry i got carried away,,lets just stick to the point

i dont have any baby corns. all corns i have eat fuzzies or larger.

so i dont think it would be like eating half a meal ?
and when i cut the sizes. the sizes are perfect.
 
well

I don't know about the pet stores but you could certainly order them online. I can't tell you that it will be o.k. to fed them half a mouse because honestly i wouldn't be doing it. So you'll have to decide for yourself because I won't say thats o.k. when I think you should just find smaller mice. online or whatever. :)

i live in South Africa so i cant order online.

:( if you were in my place what would you do

skip 3 meals everyone month ? or cut the mice into small peaces.

If I was in your place I would buy 1.4 mice and start breeding my own. I guess you'll have to cut them since you have no choice.

I suggest not feeding right on the astroturf. Put mouse inside a dixie cup or inside a lunch sized paper bag to feed. It's much safer for the snake.

Are you going to try breeding on your own?

Really its very easy....you get the mice...I would suggest 1 male mouse, and four females. You can get up to eight females or sometimes more, but four should provide enough for your snake, and I find this to be a very prolific number myself.

Place them in a cage together. You can use rubbermaid showboxes even with mesh tops made at home. Or a simple five or ten gallon tank. Mice don't really need a lot of room although you dont want to crowd them. You can fed them mice food, dogfood, seeds, veggies, fruit, etc.

Sometimes it takes a few weeks, even a month or two to get your first litter. But once you do you are off! :) They should produce a litter every month or so. You don't have to remove the male as they are excellent fathers and breeding back to back is generally what people do when breeding for snake food. This method works, but you will have to replace your breeding females. My females give me about 4 litters back to back (getting pregnant by male as soon as litter is born) then I allow them to retire. :) I think this would be a good option for you as you don't have acsess to mice and they are cheap and fun to raise, and this way you know exactly what you are feeding your snake.

I could not find one single source of frozen rodents in South Africa online! Perhaps you can purchase some from a zoo in Johannesburg or Cape Town or Durban or something? There was some indication online that there may be falconry clubs in South Africa. I could not find a solid working link though, if there are falconers down there, they may have a source for rodents. Otherwise, Big Apple Herp (www.bigappleherp.com) says they ship internationally, but there is a $250 minimum, plus you'd probably pay more shipping period. The following is copied from their shipping pages:

BMM probably has the best suggestion if you can-just breed your own. They will make more babies than you can use right away, so you might not have to breed all year long. Get C02 to euthanize the young mice humanely. Perhaps you could also sell to other herpers in the area???

Also, you might consider contacting a University and inquiring about purchasing lab mice--if you explain your plight to them, they may be able to help you out. I used to feed a lady’s boa and python and she would aquire boxes of 40 chicks to feed them. She got them from a University lab.

I have been looking into ordering online and most places will post your orders to you. Some of the ones I looked at were American based but do ship abroad. I think it was Mice on Ice and Cajun mice we looked at (found them through a search engine so cant remember the web address...just type in those titles into www.askjeeves.com or google or something similer). I don't think I'd like to breed my own mouse colony...they really smell!

i wont cut one mouse for two snakes so my snakes could eat a full meal!!!...
which means each snake will get its whole complete tasty mouse but in 2 weeks time. not one


if this is wrong please tell me.
