Fuzzies better than pinkies?

Browsing through the forums, I've come upon more than once of people mentioning a growth spurt when their snakes go from pinkies to fuzzies, and that it could be related to the increased nutritional value linked with fuzzies.

So I was thinking... Would it be better to feed your corn snake half a fuzzie rather than a whole pinkie? Would it make them grow faster?

I've also read recently about slitting pinkies before you feed, and how that makes it easier for the hatchlings to digest their meal. So that means half a fuzzie would be more nutritious AND easier to digest?

Has anyone had personal experiences with this? Any input is great, thanks!

That's a good question. Fuzzies have a higher body fat ratio than pinks. I think this is what accounts for the growth spurt. However, a newly hatched corn couldn't handle half-fuzzies of the size I get. They would require something like a quarter of a fuzzy. Not only is this level of dissection gruesome (at least to me), but it would only be practical if you had a number of hatchlings that were eating the same sized prey (you can't refreeze half a fuzzy). You'd also run the risk of omitting a nutritious organ from one hatchling's meal. It would be hard to track who got the liver last week, and who gets it this week. :grin01:

Cool question, but I'm sticking with tradition on this one. :)

Personally i'd stick to the pinkies, it wont be long till they're big enough for full fuzzies & keep slitting the mice, it works wonders........ :santa:

I once fed a 2 month old hatcling a half of a fuzzie and it wasn't pretty.(granted this wouldn't happen every time) When the corn started to eat the half the organs and a lot of blood were pushed out. It was a little gross and probly didn't give the corn every thing it needed.

The thing about fuzzies is the fuzz. Snakes don't digest the hair/fur. I try to get mine onto rat pinks if the snake will take them. Less hair/fur = less waste.

Hmm I never thought about it that way.

The reason I asked was because I ran out of pinks, and the local petstore only had hoppers. And I didn't want to wait, so I just cut up a frozen fuzzie. The mess actually was'nt too bad. I cut it in half while it was still frozen, kinda felt like cutting frozen icecream, and just defrosted it in a baggy and then fed my snakes on some paper towel, so clean up was pretty easy.

Maybe in the future if I ever get into breeding and have more snakes, I might experiment a little bit on this.
