I don't think they want a gap, I think they're asking if a gap that is that large is small enough to not let the snakes out.
I don't know the answer though sorry!

I just assumed that with the raw wood that it was being built from scratch. If that's the case I would actually make contact and maybe use something with a slicker surface than plywood. Just drill some holes in the sides of the tubs for proper ventilation.
It might be O.K. as pictured but I don't think I would feel secure enough with a corn sized snake.
