Garden centre - the guide!

Pet Corn Snake

New member
You are all probably thinking; ummm?
Well, that's understandable.

I have a suggestion for everyone:
CHECK OUT YOUR LOCAL GARDEN CENTRE!

For a exo-terra natural looking hide and waterbowl, your looking at about £6-10 each.
So when I was looking around to change my set-ups from cardboard box hides and newspaper bedding, to a more natural looking set-up, I naturally stumbled across a reptile keepers heaven. The garden centre.

I bought 5 hides, and 3 water bowls, and it all added upto £4.
WOWOWOW.

Okay, so you buy a shallow plastic plant pot, cut holes in the side and use a lighter "be careful kids ;p" to smooth round the edges.
Wash it down in the bathtub, and leave it a few hours.
Then you have a cheap, natural looking, hide/waterbowl.

This is really effective and I just thought I would make the suggestion for all new reptile keepers here at cs.com..

here is an example from google:

I have used them as well for hides they are great and cheap as well, my other corn has a dog water bowl, she can hide under it and in it.

I don't know about in the garden section - but I do know I personally refuse to use any of the super cheap painted water dishes like I use to, ever since they started find lead in various things painted in China.

That is a good idea. We, personally try to recycle anything we can around here, especially for the snakes. Since having 9 new hatchlings pip recently, I've even become happy for the first time that my 10 yr. old daughter goes through toilet paper so fast. The rolls work great, as well as yogurt (and other containers) and small round tops of things turn into water bowls. It makes me feel "greener".

LOL - whenever I suspect my alligator lizard is gravid, I go out and buy a family size potato salad bucket - I'll snack on it and finish it in a few days, and they are excellent for ambient temp lizard egg incubation (you fill with most of the way with vermiculite that is too wet, and 1.5 inches with correct vermiculite, the result is a large mass that keeps stable temp fairly well)

That's a good one. I knew I had one of those lying around for a reason. Too bad my girl has already had her two clutches for the year. We did use a big ice cream bucket for her lay box though, which she seemed to love. Makes a person feel better and be more conscious of all the "disposable" plastics that we use; don't you think?

Yea, after a year or two of keeping snakes you look at any plastic container and think how it can become useful for your reptiles ;p

I just really wanted to suggest this.. These are plastic, and therefor none toxic and easy to clean!

That is an excellent point. I'm glad I'm not the only one thinking this way. Sometimes I think I'm a little odd with 14 since starting in September, granted that 9 are our new pippies. And I dream about them all the time! At least I know what I'm doing makes sense, with it being non-toxic and all. Thanks.

I've used the plastic plant saucers since the beginning, excellent cheap hides in multiple sizes for $0.47 and up.

As for recycling things, for nice small black hides the black plastic bowl that Stouffers lasagna comes in makes a perfect hide, it looks just like those black plastic "Creature Cubbyholes". The black plastic dishes from all kinds of frozen foods and meats are perfect.

Would it work if I got macaroni salad in it first?:roflmao: great idea

Pieces of broken clay pots work really well for hides, especially for hatchlings. I did try whole clay pots for a while and it is cute to watch them go in and out the hole, until one got stuck. I had a heck of a time getting it out.
