gender of baby mice

We had a litter of mice about a week ago and would like to know how to tell what gender they are. What do we look for? The obvious is not so obvious as we look underneath. Are there different things to look for?

Thank you,
Clayton

The best way to be able to tell is when they start getting hair. Scruff their necks and turn them over to look at their bellies, you should see two rows of nipples on females. Male mice won't have them. The nipples may appear as dimples most than what we'd think of as nipples.

Also, the genitalia should start to differintiating betweeen the sexes. The urinary tube of the male, should be farther from the anus than on females, which should be very close together.

This site has pics showing the differences:

Female Belly: You can see the darker "nipples" forming a V down towards the genitals..

Male Genitals: Wide distance between urethral tube and anus & darker skin of scrotum developing...

Female Genitals: Shorter distance between tube and anus, and lighter appearance..

If you pick up a mouse by the tail it is hard to tell the sex from an untrained eye.
