General Health Checkup

With the new snake I caught (Gray Rat Snake) what would you all suggest I look at when seeing if it's healthy or not? Someone suggested taking it to a vet to check for mites? Either way I am waiting until I am sure, before taking it to my moms house where my 2 corns are at.

Mites are usually quite visible to the naked eye, but a check for parasites might be in order and at the same time they can look for mites. If it's wild caught, you can most likely be pretty sure you'll have both. If you take it where your other snakes are, be sure to keep it in a seperate room if possible for 3-6 months as a quarantine. In the meantime, check for general look of health. Shiny scales (unless it's preshed) good weight, and active.

What will I have to do to get it checked for parasites and mites?
A fecal can be done to check for intestinal parasites. Many vets require an initial exam before they will run a fecal for you. Call around and ask the vets in your area about their policy.

There are some organisms (mainly cryptosporidium) that cannot be treated. You should definitely keep the little one away from your other snakes for 6 months or so.

Does this mean a different room/house completely than my other 2 snakes? I brought it into the same room for an hour the day I fed it.. because the rest of my moms house was loud. I took it back to my dad's where I originally had it and caught it. Do you think that was a big risk?

My mom is calling the vets now. I really hope its healthy!
