getting a box turtle

ok, so im getting a box turtle from a petstore thats like alittle personally owned one. The guy is relatively knowledgable but i fell in love with this little box turtle, and its a good price and captive bred, he didnt actually say what type of box turtle so i gotta figure that out still. He looks healthy and all i had a good long look at him. but i have a few questions: what is the best/ easiest accesibly/ least messy substrate for a boxxy? also could someone let me know what all i need to set him up good and healthily

My box turtle shows no interest in his substrate so I have been using Repti-Bark. I know it can carry mites, but I've never had an issue with it. Check out the TurtleTimes forums for info on keeping all types of turtles and tortoises.

I've tried pretty much every type of substrate for my Box Turtles. I've done reptile carpet(they don't like it), soil mixed with peat moss(they liked this the best), and they are currently using Repti bark(they don't care for it too much) because it was giving to me and didn't want to waste it but I will be moving them back to soil soon because they like to burrow and dig.

Good luck with your new baby, I love Boxies.

For mine, I use damp, coco fiber. The dig in it and do well.
Remember to give him lots of greens. Mine love diced collard greens and dandelion flowers.
They also go nuts over Blueberries. Its like crack to them. I also give them a nice variety of protein, worms and crickets every once in awhile.

Here is a good site http://www.boxturtlesite.info/

Also check out Nanci's Box Turtle enclosure thread.. it will make you and your turtle jealous.

A word of advice please please please make sure your state and local laws allow Box turtles. In some counties and states they are illegal

He lives in Canada and it was Cb and unless there is a cities prevention on this animal and it requires a permit, I believe he is fine

I have just heard Canadas herp laws are pretty tough from a good freind of mine ho lives in winnepeg

But both of them are in Canada which has its own CITIES laws as a nation. I have many freinds on Canada.

I'd be as worried about what "type" of box turtle as any. I know there are some that get HUGE. And most people don't have the room to care for them properly once they've reached a certain size.
Please be sure what type it is and how big it will get before you plunge into the ownership.

An outdoor pen works well if you live in a temperate area and know how to hibernate them correctally. Nut I don't know veyr much about terrestrial turtles. I have an aunt who has had a Red eared slider for 21 years
