Don't worry about the extreme cold temps, I am sure that it never gets that cold in your home. Most people keep their homes around 72degrees, which is the cold end for a snake but isn't going to kill them.
IMOP what I started out with worked pretty good and that was a 10g aquarium, wire top, spot light and UT heater. You will need to get a bigger cage but this will do for a while and give you time to save up for a bigger cage or ask for one for Christmas/birthday. I have read that a lot of people on this site keep their snakes in the clear tubs that you can get at most department stores which would be inexpensive and easy to clean. This heater can be put inside the cage
IntelliTemp Heat Mat I think I am going to get a couple of those myself. And you can just get an outside thermometer to hang on the hot side to monitor the heat. Put in a hide on each side, which for a baby could be empty tissue role, flower pot, etc and a water bowl and your done.
Everbody has started out right where you are. But you are a couple of steps ahead because of the research that you have already done.
Oh, and handling them just takes practice. If you are worried about dropping them, just handle them while you are sitting on the floor, bed, couch, etc.
