i know this is a stupid question but i need to know a definate answer.

there is a snake that we are going to buy that is "gravid", am i wright in saying this means she has layed eggs or is going to lay eggs?

sorry if it sounds stupid but i do not breed snakes.

thanks for all help.

lee

p.s if a snake is gravid should that put you off buying it?

Gravid means she is going to lay eggs. So now the question is...do you want babies or not. If you are not ready then I would not buy her. If you do buy her you need to do a lot of research and get everything ready.

thanks so much for the help. my dad went to the shop again today and he doesn't really have a clue what he is talking about when it comes to snakes anyway and he said the man mentioned something about her being gravid. tomorrow is when we are meant to be picking it up anyway so i will ask him questions then. if she is gravid i do not think i will get her because i don't want to cause problems to her and babies through stress. we could probably get the man to reserve her anyway until she has laid eggs. it would be such a shame as she is honestly the nicest snake i have ever seen. she is soooooooo friendly its really unbelievable.

thanks for the help.

I'm not sure about stressing the snake, but it could be stressful for you as Dave said are you prepared. Lay box, adequate way to incubate the eggs, after they hatch where would you keep hatchlings??? Do you have access to small pinkies for hatchlings? What will you do with the hatchlings? good luck, susan

If you like the snake, get her. You don't really have to worry about the eggs. If you don't want to incubate and hatch them, just dispose of them. But you do have to worry about the female. You'd want her to comfortably pass her eggs without incident, so you'd give her a laybox filled with moist (not wet) sphagnum moss, or even paper towels. The laybox can be any lidded plastic container big enough to hold 2-3 snakes of your female's size, with an entry-hole cut into it. You'd place the box at the midpoint between the cold and warm sides.

But if you can get the guy to hold her until she lays, that wouldn't be a bad option either.

thanks for the help every one. we got her today. she layed the eggs 3 months ago apparently so i dont know what the man was talking about. even if she does lay eggs (if the persons lying) it is no problem as we have all the stuff ready for the eggs. and by the time they hatch we would have some sort of hatchling rack system sorted.

thanks for the help anyway.

the store owner may know she was put with a male again, or even if not she could double clutch. You will know if she sheds and starts roaming around her viv constantly, she might refuse food, just give her the lay box. Good luck, susan
