Greek terms

I'm Trying to learn all the greek terms used in the corn snake trade. so i dont feel so oblivious when i go to expos and what not. mainly for breeding purposes.

also my friend has an Amel Het Butter. what does that mean? i know the two snake types but whats the Het part? and what would the offspring look like if bred with R.Okee?

thanks for any input

I can help a little. Het is short for heterozygous.

Your physical features are governed by the presence of two genes (for that particular feature), one from Mom and one from Dad.
Humans can have brown eyes or blue eyes. The gene for brown eyes is dominant. If you have brown eyes, you could either have one gene for brown from Dad and one gene for brown from Mom, in which case you would be homozygous (for brown eyes). Or you could have one gene for brown from Mom or Dad and one gene for blue from the other parent, in which case you are heterozygous (but we can't tell just by looking at you). The other possibility is that you have two recessive genes for blue eyes, one from each parent, in which case you would be homozygous and have blue eyes.

So if I have brown eyes and am het for blue eyes and I reproduce with a women who is het for blue eyes (or HAS blue eyes), my kids COULD have blue eyes. If I have blue eyes and my wife has blue eyes, our kids MUST have blue eyes.

Hope that helps.

By amelanistic het butter your friend really means amelanistic heterozygous caramel. Heterozygous simply means that the animal has a pair of genes that are not the same. In this case, the snake has a normal gene paired with a caramel mutant gene.

I can never remember which words are from Latin and which from Greek. Here are some you might run into:

amelanistic - lacks melanin (brown/black pigment)
anerythristic - lacks red pigment
hypomelanistic - has less melanin than normal
axanthic - lacks yellow pigment
homozygous - has a pair of genes that are the same (identical).
heterozygous - has a pair of genes that are not the same.
leucistic (leukistic) - white. Generally white in color with very dark red to black pupils and blue, gray, or silvery irises.
locus - a location somewhere in the genome.

There are others I haven't thought of.

thanks for the imput. but what do you think the offsping will come out like will there be butter/carmel, R. okeetee? or just a mix of different colored snakes or what?

they are both babies right now so it will be a while before we know for sure.

Reverse Okeetee is one of the many flavors of amelanistic. That, mated to an amelanistic thats heterozygous for caramel, will produce all amelanistic babies. Other things may appear, depending on what genes are present in the heterozygous state.
