There's a way to hook up a rheostat (light dimmer) and you will get the same effect...sort of. I don't have my UTH hooked up to a thermostat that shuts it off when it's warm enough, and back on again.
I hard wired a dimmer switch to the middle of an extention cord, so that one end is for the UTH, and the other plugs in. Works like a champ, but I have to turn it up in the winter a bit and down in the summer (but generally holds steady within the appropriate heating range). I have 2 thermometers in the tank to keep track of everything. PM me if you like directions on how to make it..it cost me less than 10 buck!
