Hanging out in the top of the cage

Hello all, just got my first corn a few days ago. I've been worried about the temperature, but without a digital thermometer, I can't tell if it's too cold or not. I should be getting new thermometers today, so that problem will hopefully sort itself out.

My main concern is that my snake has been hanging out in the top of the cage, in between the top of the tank and the lid. I have the lid secured on with 4 clips, I'm just worried that this is abnormal behavior. Seeing as it is winter time, I've been worried that it's too cold for him and that is why he has been staying so high. I have a UTH under one side of his tank and a heating lamp that I keep going all day and night (I have a specific night lamp). I know that corns don't really need heating lamps but because it is a little colder in my apartment I thought it would be ok.

As a first time owner, any advice is appreciated. Thank you!

It is normal behavior for little ones. I remember going through the same thoughts with mine when I first got them.

There really isnt need for the heating lamp it can actually make the viv way to warm for your lil guy. They just need belly heat. The air temp doesnt really make a difference for corns.

I would defintally get a thermometer, the dial ones can be off 20 degrees, so look for the digital one with a probe(around $10). One half of the tank should be room temp(70-75f), the other side should be warmer (80-85f). It could be too hot in there and that is why he is up there. He also could be trying to find a way out. What do you have for hides in there? I find my little ones prefer a smaller low to the ground hide. A simple toilet paper roll will work, cut it length wise (C shape) and try that.

This is his tank, do you think I should add another hide? I have the UTH on the right hand side, under the 3 rocks. He's currently chilling out under the log. I took him out earlier to hold him and he's been under the log since then.

How often should I be handling him? I got him 3 days ago, he still seems kind of freaked out, but I figured handling him at least daily would get him used to me. Is that a bad idea?

I would leave him be for about a week. I recommend 2 hides. One on the cold side and one on the right side. Also with an UTH you will need to use a thermastat to control the temps. If not it can get to hot and burn your snake. The Digital thermometer should be on the glass right about the UTH.

As far as handling, after the week, I would take him out for about 30 mins a day to get him use to it.

i just brought mine home too and thought the same bout handling and found out bout the stress situation with corns i got her wendsday and been leavin he b since friday she came out of her hide for a bit today been drinkin water so looks like shes startin to come around in her new habitat... good luck with ur new friend and have a good day

Yes it is normal behavior. My corn Lucy, seems to just love doing that and driving me crazy as i hear a *Thud* every time she falls! The crazy thing is she KEEPS doing it! Its just so me to pick a daredevil snake! Haha!! Shes either doing 3 things. 1) trying to get out 2) escape 3) "hunting" (she loves to eat). So dont worry a long as your corn doesnt really hurt itself its fine.
