I figured I would get a jump on tomorrows cage cleaning for the feeder colonies and do the ASFs today, when I went back the hall this is what I found. I know it is in their nature to combine litters in one nest, but you would think that it would be easier for them to each care for their own babies in seperate nest. There are pinkies somewhere in the middle of this, with two different sizes of fuzzies. And everyone once in a while the juvis hop in there to try to get a drink too. The thing is they keep moving it around to a few different spots. I think the moms are in debate where to keep the nest and whenever it is their time to feed, they move them all.

Yeah, I haven't fed any off yet. The more I look at them, the more I know I gotta build that co2 chamber quickly or else I am going to have alot of pet rats, lol. :)

Cute picture...
I actually managed to find two ASF Rats being sold in a local pet shop. Both were boys and they were being sold under the name: dwarf colored rats. I left a note for the manager to see if he could rustle me up a couple of females, and we shall see what he comes up with. Epensive little buggers around here that's for sure. I know in the long run that its 60.00 well spent. Time will tell if he shows up with some.
Peace
Scott

$60????????

Wow, dude. You live in Reading, I live in Philipsburg, do you ever get up our way? Ever go to State College or even the Altoona area for anything? If you do and you are willing to wait a couple of months, I would gladly meet you in one of those places and give you a couple of females. By that time I the colonies should be going good. I got these guys up in Dubois and really I think I lucked out in a way.

I had been there a month or so before and all they had were a couple of males and they said to check back in they might get more, but it was a hit or miss thing. So a month or so had passed and I called up there (it is almost an hour drive) and the lady said, "oh yeah, we got a bunch of them. Yeah, we got plenty of females too!" So I jumped in the car and drove like nuts, got there and lo and behold the tank which was busting out with about 16 of these and they were all male! So I asked the guy why I was told they had females and I had driven that far. Well after a quiet talk in the back room, they came back out to me and said they called the one guy who works there (who apparently breeds them) and that he had a few young females he could bring in for me but it wouldn't be till later that evening. So I went home and got kids off the bus and we made another trip up there.

Price of the rats....$1.99 a head. Which they gave me a break on with the extra driving because they were listed at $2.99 a piece. So $60 is a bit nuts, I paid a little over that to get tank, screen lid, locking clips, water bottle, bottle holder, food and rats together. Anyway, State College is about a half hour from me, Altoona 45 minutes (which I think is closer to you), if you want to wait and make the drive, I can save you $60. :)

Wow thanks for the offer...
I was amazed at the price but then this is the "big city" or so they like to think around here anyway. State College is about 150 Miles from me with Altoona being about 200. Do you know anyone who goes to the Hamburg PA shows? I decided I was going to wait to find something cheaper. I have no problem with driving to State College since I commute to Philadelphia 3 days a week. So there you have it. We will have to keep in touch during the next couple of months.
Take care

Reading is only ~1/2 an hour from the Hamburg show. I've picked them up there for 4 for $5. Good luck and have fun with them!

Reading.....why was I thinking Johnstown? For some brainfart of a moment I was thinking Reading being near Johnstown, which is near Altoona. Sorry about that. I plan on going to the Feb. show at Hamburg. I love it and usually attempt to get to each one of them. Like the last poster said, you can pick them up at the show, which I might look for a male or two to try to thin out the blood lines. I don't know what you are looking for as far as number but if you are going and want to get a couple of females off of me and pick up a male there, that might work best with bloodlines; but then if they don't have any there, you wouldn't have a male. I have been to all of them last year and never saw any, but then at that point I wasn't looking at feeders so I just floated by the section with the rats, mice, chicks, rabbits, etc...

I believe Smokin when he said he saw them there, didn't mean that like that, but you never know ahead of time or they might sell out before hand. Hard to tell, but the offer stands, if you want em and we can make plans to meet. Send me a pm so I have it in my folder here, that way when it gets closer, I'll hopefully remember. :)
