ok look i got a black light heat light and a heat pad they all work but i can't raise the temp in the tank any higer then 73F i have a 20 H&L tank with a wire lid. please help!!!!

A heat pad AND a lamp only get it up to 73ºF? It's possible your thermometer is broken. Or you need to buy a new heat pad and lamp.

check the wattage of the light. I had the same problem and looked and found out I had grabed a 30 watt light. That will hardly heat a fly. Try to find something around 60-75 watts hope that helps.

Yeah, the mat should be around 20 Watts and the bulb should be 60 or a little bit more. And, like Iris said, your thermometer could be broken.

two thermometers

I use two thermometers in my main tank, at different locations so I can see what the temperature gradient is.
If your tank has a wire mesh top, are you losing all the heat, and just heating the room?

the heating pad works cause when i feel the glass from the inside it's hot but when i put the reptile bark back over it it loses all the heat so i think the thermoter works and i'm not sure bout the light i'm looking for the box now

you may have spread the repti bark too thickly over the heat pad. Try thinning it out a bit and then lay the thermometer directly on the substrate to see what the temperature is.

If your heat pad is working and your lamp is 60 watts or more and your thermometer is working, you could cover about 3/4 of the tank top with a board to hold the heat in. It must be really cold in your house? IMHO
