I've done a search and really couldn't find an answer to my question..even tho I'm sure it's out there and I'm just blind. :shrug: So I"m gonna ask it anyway! Sorry!

I'm going to build a viv for my snakes and I'm totally confused on how I should heat it! so my question.... can I put a heat mat or uth directly in the viv as long as it's controlled by a thermometer or rheostat? Initially,I was going to sandwich some heat tape between the floor of the viv and a piece of porcelain tile, but I've read that there needs to be some sort of air circulation around it or it can be dangerous.

So that's it...any help would be appreciated!

I'm right in the middle of making two wooden "Viv's" for my snakes.
The heat problem.... well, I'm using flexwatt, 11" wide type. I mortise the bottom of the floor (using 3/4"plywood) and gave it some room also mortise in 1/8" Plexiglas to cover it. I plan to screw and silicone that in.
Just to test the flexwatt, I hook it up one night and let it run four or so hours unregulated and it never got real hot, just warm to the touch. But I didn't check the true temp. But I wanted to see if it would damage the wood or paint. So It seems safe to me. The circulation, well like I said I mortise it in and... gave it some room plus I have a hole in the back for the wires so it should be fine but I do plan on checking every thing out first.
I did find a heat mat somewhere (site) that was "water proof" but I wanted a set up that was easy to clean and having a mat in there with a wire through the wall didn't sound easy to me. I hope that helps if any. If I remember, I'm post some picture for you.

I believe I must be very small in brain because that was kinda hard for me to understand LOL so pictures might be needed! ;D
