Hedgehogs?

Anyone have any experience with them?

I never had really seen one before and I saw one today at my local pet store.
He really liked me, It had a small hole in the cage he was in and he was smelling me and such - I kinda sorta.. fell in love.

I want to learn more about them and perhaps convince my boyfriend I need one for christmas. ;) But I would like to learn about peoples experiences with them first good/bad/alright?

From what I've read they don't smell, and can be very tame as well as adorable.
Need decent sized cages and 65 - 78 degrees at all times as well as lights on every day for the day time hours. Eat cat food as well as meal worms and such, etc, etc.

They seem pretty cool! Too bad the average life span is only 4 - 6 years. :(

I have a hedgehog who is almost 5 years old now. She is an old grouchy grump, but is cute haha. She likes the simple things in life...sleeping, eating, drinking, running on her wheel.

The only reason I'd be cautious of getting one from a petshop is they tend to be unsocialized. Not always, but most that I've seen in petshops are not. I got mine from a breeder who handled her babies often, and she was sweet as could be from day 1. Though you can still get them used to your scent and calmed down, just takes more work.

In general I don't find them too hard to keep.

Oh I wasn't planning on getting one from a pet store.
I read about how they're not the best places to get ANY pet.

I looked up some breeders in my area and contacted some of them with some questions.
I like the salt and pepper ones a lot. :)

This is an old picture of my hedgehog, when she was probably only 1-2 years old. Displaying her cat proof armour abilities  She is an oak brown snowflake.

She tends to get very dry skin so I have to give her baths with oatmeal lotion. The edges of her ears also tend to get super dry and crusty and gross so I have to rub cocoa butter on them to keep them from getting too dry....something that has become increasingly difficult in her now old and grumpier age! I don't expect she has too much longer, but she is still pretty active and eats and drinks so she seems to be doing fine for now except for carrying slightly less weight and her grumpy attitude!

That one is very cute, I love the cat also.

What are their poos like?
Bunny/rodent like or more so like ferrets?

Also you never know, you might have the rare ones that live up to nine! :)

you need one? lol

some are nice some are mean at night my buddies would run around the cage in circles and make noise keeping us upp..... he would hurt if he almost like coughed if someone was holding him and the cough made his spikes jet out and poke and hurt.

I've ALWAYS wanted a hedgehog... Next to more snakes, they're up there on my wish list. BUT, AZ law has a ban on them... :( Oh, well...

I had a hedgehog for a while, but when I went back to Afghanistan I donated Penelope to the Youth and Teen Center on Holloman AFB, because I had already left her with my parents in La in 2008 and when I got back she was more mean than she was before I left. But I calmed her down a bit before giving her to the Youth and Teen Center. I also gave them a book on Hedgehogs and all of her food.

From what I remember, she was a walking bladder/poop factory with spikes. She also ate a lot...lol But, she was awesome, and I would get another one if I could.

We had two brothers for about 10 years. Their personalities were as different as night and day. One was friendly, and the other was a constant pincushion who NEVER wanted to be touched. I must say that I found them rather boring. They're nocturnal, and back then, I wasn't (old age has caught up to me--I sleep less at night, now :). Although they're cute as can be, I must say that I didn't enjoy them as much as I thought we would. If I'm going to have to go through the trouble of taking care of a pair of them, it would be nice if they were a little more interactive :).
