Hello everyone I got my gf a corn snake for valentines day!!!
200$ later LOL after buying everything no big deal long as shes happy.

She is loving it doing all kinds of research right now but I need some quick answers the guy at the store told us not to get the lamp to close to the cage and that she cant play with him for a week because he is getting settled into his cage.

Is this ok?
Does it need to be closer or farther?

Also someone told me that the cage is to small is this true? If so what is a good size?

I plan to get him a better hiding spot as well and a tree to climb if he want.

Im picking that up tomorrow along with the heater pad for him, feel bad he has to have the light on all night its like 63-68 degrees in my room.

Any advice for me or my gf, she handled him at the store and is in dire love with him and upset she cant play with him for the next week because he is getting adjusted

Heres another pic

I dont really like snakes they freak me out but im sure he will grow on me, Im just afraid of being bit, but im sure it cant be worse then a dog bite so dont know why Im so nervous around him. He isnt even that big LOL

I would have spent the pretty penny on a uth not ahanging light for basking reps, the carrier is great for trips to the vet but not to live in. For that size snake I would start with a ten gallon tank or if you prefer tubs a shoebox sized sterilite tub. Other than those that looks pretty good to me. Alot of people will say a week is good, me I wait until they start exploring really good UNLESS they are active from the start. For those that are all over the place from the start I wait at least 3 or 4 days. This is IF I get them early in the week so I am not going to feed for several days. I feed on mondays as right now all of my snakes are fed weekly.

Look up the Munson plan though its a good guide on feeding.

Sorry for the double post, that box is not a good enough hide. Its too open. They need something cave like or tube-ish like a TP roll.

Thanks ok Im looking at a 10 gallon tank tomorrow, also a 25 gallon tank I know that is big for his size but might get it at a good price is this plausible?

Yeah the guy told me a heat lamp going to see if I can change it out, prob not but no biggy Ill still get the pad. What I have read it is a good thing to have.

Ok thanks I am getting another hide tomorrow for sure!! I just forgot to get one when I was there. :headbang:

haha just ran out of tp is it ok if I put it in their now or will he freak on me?

Also if I am transferring him from this cage to a 10 gal tomorrow is he going to be hard core stressed?

Be sure to pick up something to regulate his temps, too. A rheostat or thermostat are musts if you don't want him to become a snake-kebab. I use a sliding lamp dimmer from Home Depot for mine and it works fine.

You don't need to buy special hides from the petstore, they're overpriced and just for looks. He shouldn't be freaked if you put the tp roll in, and as long as you leave him alone in the dark as much as possible for the next week, I don't think putting him in a new 10gal will be too much extra stress. The kritter keeper he's in now is definitely too small, but if you clean it it'll make a great tank for feeding him in and taking him to the vet. Speaking of food, what're you getting him for food? Contrary to popular belief snakes can't live off one meal a year... :)

Also, cut the TP tube in half lengthwise... the little guys don't usually use the whole ones.

Cute little snakey! Everybody has given you all the right advice already as far as care is concerned. I will just say that at this size it hardly hurts if they do bite so don't worry about it, OK? And if you have the chance to get the 25G, that will do for the rest of the snake's life so if it's cheap, get it!

Welcome to your new addiction! Snakes are addictive.

Thanks EVERYONE!!!

I dont know how addictive they are Im more of a gun fanatic my gf is the snake fanatic but I will admit....*gulp* he is growing on me....

We got him 10 pinkies we were told to feed him once a week, and he needs to be fed on friday.

Im buying her a book about them tomorrow!

Ok question I just flipped his thing over so it makes it darker for him and more of a hiding place.

Here is the question this is hard to do without a thermostat.

Once I moved it I felt NO HEAT from the heat lamp so I moved it a littler close and since I tipped his hidding spot up he is now ontop of it im not sure if he is
A) trying to get out
B) trying to get warmer....

sorry to make another post so soon cant find a edit button on the post.

I think he may be trying to escape LOL he is moving quite a bit (he was very still for the last few hours) now that I moved his hiding spot he is either upset or decided ot come out and play and my gf is having a blast watching him and taking pictures dunno what she is gonna do when we have kids LOL!!!!!

Anyway he is becoming VERY VERY active right now =P good thing right?

Or he is upset and bad thing? LOL

I was reading another thread that they feel better and safer I guess when they explore?

Thanks

Probably trying to get out. Snakes are escape artists, so whatever size you tank you end up getting make sur the top fits verrrrry tightly.

OOOO I will!!!

I heard that they can (corn snakes) actually push a BRICK off the top the lid!!!

Is this ture? :crazy01:

You want the temp to be around 80-85F in the warm area, and that won't feel very warm to your hand, if it feels warm to your hand it may well be too warm. So be careful & get a thermometer soonest.

There are lots of shooters here who are also snake lovers so you will fit right in.

^ that is awesome and yes thermostat coming tomorrow Im going to be there when they open.... I think this snake is growing on me quickly I actually want to hold him but cant LOL

A baby like yours can't lift a brick but I wouldn't put it past a big strong adult!

Wow that is crazy!!!!

Not a baby like yours, but I wouldn't be surprised if an adult could. Keep in mind they're almost entirely muscle with a lifetime to devote to getting out.

Hey everyone!!

Went out today got the Under heating pad, 2 thermostats, 20 gallon tank (got it for a good deal), 2 hiding spots a bigger water spot, (wanted a waterfall but couldnt find one I liked), tomorrow getting a tree for him to climb on..

Here are some pics also do I need a night light? Forgot the name but the black light that produces heat but not light?

Anything Im forgetting or need? Please let me know.

I washed everything before putting it in and rinsed it A LOT!!! I am still kinda nervous but I have faith I feel I washed it and rinsed it quite well..

I know he is stressed I feel bad but, I feel he will cope quite quickly.

BTW his name is Fable I got to name him =P

Add some stuff for him in the middle, like fake foliage, and a digital thermometer with the probe on the glass on the UTH & I think you're set!
