Hello! First time snake owner.

Hey glad to finally be a part of these forums. Im a 20 year old male, i love animals and own 1 dog, a cat, an ornate pack man frog and now a corn snake! I've stalked this site for months while considering to buy a corn snake and finally caved in and got one :p. the pet store owner informed me the snake is a 3-5 months old normal female and feeds well.

I bought a 20 gallon tank with aspen bedding a couple hides, branches, lots of vines, a watering dish and an uth. the hot side of the tank is around 90 degrees with the uth on and around 75-80 degrees on the cool side. she is currently eating 1-2 f/t pinkies every 4 days and is growing already!

I must say ive fallen in love with snakes and plan on buying more in the future! Any advice/tips for a newbie corn owner would be greatly appreciated.

and ill post pics if you wanna see :)

Thanks heres some pics of the viv and a little fatty (she just ate)

Congrats on the new addition! I'm a newbie here too, but everyone is really helpful with anything you ask. Do you have a thermostat for your uth? If not, I would seriously invest. Since corns like to burrow in the aspen and can lay right on top of the uth, its a possibility that they can burn themselves. Just a thought. :D

It's funny you mentioned that because i just took my uth off today. it was 100+ degrees on the very bottom of the tank and my snake (unnamed, taking suggestions) would be on the cool side in her tree. So i switched to a ceramic heat emitter that i use for my pacman frog and have the hot side around 85 again. Those cheap petco thermometers take a LONG time to adjust and seem a little janky. so id be willing to drop some cash to upgrade.

What thermostat do you use/suggest?

Welcome Dlop! When you get your next snake, I'd suggest getting one from one of the members here. There are lots of great snakes available. Do read the BOI before buying!

Sounds like the UTH was working too well, is it stuck to the bottom of the tank? You might try putting a spacer, say 1/4 - 1/2 inch between it and the UTH. The gap would reduce the temp on the bottom of the tank.

Yes thanks for the suggestion! i will no doubt buy another snake and ill begin by searching these forums, seems like theres a wide selection!

yes it was stuck to the bottom but i took it off until i found a solution. Ill try sticking a 1/2 spacer between and monitoring the temp. Would a towel or cardboard make a good spacer?

I bought the one off of Big Apple's website. 45 bucks plus shipping, I believe. I wouldn't space it with anything flammable for obvious reasons. possibly just set it on the stand the tank is on?

I've got one spaced with 1/2 inch thick wood blocks. The blocks aren't on the mat, but on either side of it. I'm getting a dimmer on it, to better control the temps. Best bet is a thermistat.

That link is spam. I'll report it. The mods need to be told when that happens so they can deal with it.
