Hi everyone! About a week ago I picked up a baby okeetee (Merlot) and yesterday I finally was able to pick up my new big baby, a rescued miami okeetee. He's called Cabby (short for Cabernet).

Cabby is over 4ft long and is very friendly, and the baby is a typical baby, shy but I'm sure will warm up in time, I've been handling about 5 to 10 mins every other day but today was feeding day.

I do have a question, the pinkies I got were slightly bigger than the ones they had been fed, so how long should I wait before I start handling Merlot again? The bulge was pretty big.

Its really nice to be on a forum with like-minded people and I hope we'll all get along. :)

Hi and welcome, great to see another fellow canuck!!!!!! I normally wait 2 -3 days after feeding to handle a snake (not counting the day of the feed, I fed my baby yesterday so today is day one as an example). Of course to be completely safe wait until he poops!!!!!!

This forum is awesome you'll enjoy your time here.

Hello back from Virginia! Welcome.
Nice that you have a rescue. A lot of people here have rescued animals. My Cheerio was also previously used.

Welcome to the forums! :wavey:

The previous posts were correct. Waiting 2-3 days after feeding is the average waiting period. If the prey item had been unusually large, waiting until the lump shrunk would be another way to know if was safe to handle.

Nice of you to rescue!! Now you just need to post pics of your snakes!

welcome fellow canuck! i'm from Hamilton Ontario!
it looks like there are quite a few of us here!

I love the names you've chosen... sounds like you've picked out your theme, already :) Look forward to seeing pictures of them... we love pictures around here.

Welcome to the group :)

Wow I can feel the love already! Thanks you guys, I'm such a worried mummy too, I left a christmas party early last night to check on Merlot to make sure he hadn't regurged or anything but he was curled up in his cool hide happy as could be, he was on the warm side this morning. I think I was a little overzealous leaving the space heater on while I was gone and he got too warm.

I was looking at pictures of other people's snakes and I'm not sure about their types anymore. Merlot looks suspiciously like a Normal and Cabby I have no idea. I'm not very good with colour specifics yet, any one care to take a stab at it??

sorry for the poor quality photos my camera is still at the house the party was at LOL.

This is Cabby basking in his viv.

hey welcome to the site and congrats on your 2 new snakes, merlot looks identical to my baby a regular normal corn, cant see cabby well enought to hazard a guess and my knowledge of the differents morphs is very limited so far but im learning quick thanx to this site

Yeah I know, there is so much knowledge saturating the site I feel a little like a sponge. I'm a little sad if he's a confirmed normal, it just sounds so.... normal? but of course it doesn't mean that I will love him any less. But okeetee just sounds so exotic and its a conversation starter to be sure. :D

Take some more pics try to zoom in on his pattern that should help. Of course if he IS normal, you can always call him a classic, lol.

Howdy from Vancouver Island!

^ He's right, classic sounds so much better, I think they're underrated anyway!

Heres a few more pictures of Cabby, Merlot is still digesting so I don't want to bother him with cameras and all that.

When I get my camera back there will be better pictures but I hope this helps with figuring out what he is.

WELCOME!!! They both look great and I congratulate you on your new snakes. Glad you were able to rescue Cabby. He looks like one big, beautiful guy.

Hope you have fun!
