Hello

I found this forum while researching corn snakes(I don't own one, yet). I have always been interested in reptiles growing up, I have a degree in Wildlife Biology and took a herp class in college. Growing up I tried to get my parents to let me get a snake, but it never worked out. I came home one day w/ a Rosehair Tarantula and they got use to it but still no snakes. Now I am married and trying to talk my wife into it(any advise would be helpful).

I came on here to ask a few questions

When feeding, do you need to give the mice any kinda of movement or do you just set in the cage?

I noticed when talking about the cages, aquariams, etc... people use viv, what is this an abbreviation for?

Is it safe to have snakes shipped?, what are the odds of them getting hurt in shipment( by the way i work for fedex so i know how pakages get treated sometimes)

thank you

For feeding, it is best to put both mouse and snake in a small box out of the viv (vivarium) so it doesn't ingest the substrate (floor covering) and impact it, or ascosiate your hand entering the tank with food.

Viv is a vivarium, which is basicly a reptile tank.

As for this I have no expreiance in the matter, sorry :) Hope this helped.

Sorry forgot to add, welcome to the forums :D Hope you have a good time here, and learn a lot. Do you know what type of corn you are getting?

Some snakes will have a better feeding response if you wriggle the mouse with tongs, some prefer to be left completely alone in the dark, so it depends on the particular snake's feeding habits.
Welcome and hope to see your new snake soon

if and when I get my setup will the tank and the things going the tank need to be cleaned first?

do you use tap water or ...... what for water?

Hi and welcome. I got my corn and my kids and husband liked him so much, we got another. Corns are so pretty and gentle, how can someone not just love them? Good luck!!

Gently remind her that they don't piddle or poop on the carpet...the don't chew up anything....they don't shed hair all over the house...they don't make any noise....they don't have dander or feathers.....they don't smell (provided you keep the cage clean) and they only eat once or twice a week and nobody is allergic to reptiles......worked for me :) when we first met!

Good Luck

if you have a look through the basic husbandry faq, it will answer most of your queries easily, I use a reptile-safe cleaning spray I buy at the same place I get my frozen mice, some people use bottled water for their corns to drink, but I use tap water

ok thanks, I didn' t see anything about water anywhere I looked.

I also see people using thrmostats on heat pads, how do they do this, do they wire into the heat pad cord or is it made for the heat pad?
