i have a new baby corn snake. i read book and i understand you feed baby's about every 5-7 days. now my corn snake is dew for her first feeding since she has been in her new home. when we bought her the person told us that they feed live pinkies every week and they have tried to feed there existing baby's f/t mice but they refuse. so i bought her the first pinkie mouse on her 6th day since last feeding. she is seems scared of it. i do not want to kill the mouse and throw it away since they told us it would only last 2 days. i am worried because the book i read said they will take 4 mice a week if given a chance even though it is bad for them. is there anything i can do? i know you shouldn't leave a live mouse in the snakes cage unattended but can i for a pinkie mouse? or is there any way i can kill the mouse and just put it in the till my snake is hungry? or are there any techniques i can use to get her to eat also i made sureshe was warm when i offered the mouse to her but all she would do is go the other direction.

Well most hatchling corn snakes eat every 4-5 days starting with one pinkie, and increasing with time. Is your snake getting ready to shed? You should not feed it in the viv because the snake could ingest substrate unless you are using newpaper or paper towel. I would try f/t pinkies first, the go to live if it still doesn't eat. If you buy live and it doesn't eat you can freeze it. Do not try to feed everyday, this will only stress the snake. What are your temps. in the viv? Also when you feed her put her in a small container to eat where she can't get away from the pinkie. good luck, susan

She may still be adjusting to her new home hatchlings can take a week or more to get settled in. You probably want to avoid handling during that time but if you have already don't worry about it. Pinkies you can leave in with your snake as they have no teeth or claws to injure your snake. You also should make sure your feeding in a small seperate container not inside their living space because your snake could ingest substrate by mistake while its eating. Plus if its in a smaller container your snake is kept closer to the food so it may eat it just out of annoyance/bordem. Ideally you want to get it eating frozen/Thawed mice as they are easier to deal with. I would recommend waiting to try and transfer until you get it eating. I wouldn't worry to much though as your snake could probably go for a number of weeks without eating without any major risk! As for killing the pinkie you should be able to freeze it to death by putting it in a ziplock back and pushing out most of the air then putting it in your freezer. You then thaw it later by running hot water over it. One last thing don't try and feed every day if they refuse avoid feeding for a few days then try again.

As for feeding frequency and amount this chart should help:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Corn_Snake#Subspecies (Its right in the middle has a little chart based on snake weight and such Its what is called the Munson plan here)

OK the reason why i didn't feed f/t pinkies is because the person that sold us the snake said it would be really hard to change to f/t pinkies. but since he was just a store clerk i think he doesn't know much about this stuff and from reading the books about corns snakes it seems it should be really east to switch to f/t. so i take it i can just freeze the pinkie that i have and feed it to she in a few days and as for the temps and stuff in the cage i feed him in a separate container so she doesn't ingest any aspen bedding and i was sure the temperature was just right (about 75-78%) so she should of ate it but i think she is still adjusting :D thanks
